I have been involved in Uganda for nearly 20 years (with Just Care) and I’m now involved with a new charity ‘Communitas Care’ (Charity Number 1167217). They work in partnership with the Church of Uganda, in the West Buganda Diocese, about 70 miles west of Kampala, near to Masaka, Kamutuuza and Kako Cathedral.

Develop With Dignity Project

You may not be aware that many young women in Africa miss school because of a lack of protective sanitary wear and often suffer infection due to using inappropriate protection. Recently, a friend of mine, Dave Cooke, from TEAMS4U, has been working in Uganda with an organisation called Afripads who manufacture washable sanitary pads. These pads last for twelve months and can be washed in cold water and dry in an hour.

Through the links and contacts with schools, the Afripads are being distributed and some health education is given to the young teenagers at the same time.

TEAMS4U and the trustees of Communitas Care are currently in the process of developing an extended training programme for the teachers – this will include many aspects of women’s physical and emotional health across the lifespan and will be used when delivering the Afripads.

But it doesn’t stop there!
We have a container going to Uganda in the Summer of 2016 and we are hoping to send new Knickers and gently worn Bras to be given away to the girls along with the Afripads at the same time. We also hope to make up a small ‘Dignity’ bag including Deodorant, Baby Wipes, Vaseline and a Pocket Mirror.

What you can do?
We  would be delighted if you were able to collect any of these items for us and consider donating £6 to buy a packet of Afripads. There are 4 pads in each pack.
