David Porritt has written a helpful framework of five qualities to look for in a leader. How do you match up?
Having had the opportunity of talking with some senior leaders recently about the sorts of things that seem to be necessary for leadership to work I wanted to capture our discussion here. There are of course lots and lots of things that I might look for in a leader. But here are Five that seem to me to be really significant. I’ve found that when all are present life works so much more easily and fruitfully than when they are not. And it also seems to me, that four of them – any four – are not actually enough for the leadership work we’re undertaking to work really well. Perhaps reducing things down to five is a bit artificial but here goes. I’m happy to invite discussion and comments.
When I’m looking for leaders I’m looking to see that:-
They are trustworthy. They: –
- maintain their role, and stick to the mission in the face of opposition
- do not compromise on correct principles (honesty, respect, integrity, confidentiality)
- do not abuse their authority
- they do what they say they will do
They are people who take the initiative. They are: –
- resilient
- passionate
- courageous
- disciplined
- proactive
- realistic & optimistic
They are people who use good judgment. They: –
- keep a clear conscience
- are definite and decisive
- know when to change their mind
- know their own limitations
- are discerning
- are energetic
They are people who speak with authority. They:-
- learn and apply their learning to new situations
- think, reflect and are considered
- know when to speak and when not to
- know how to learn
- are confident in deferring to others who know more
- know when they know most and when they do not
Someone who makes others stronger and better by: –
- being optimistic and enthusiastic
- focusing on objectives, not obstacles
- setting an example that others want to follow
- cultivating loyalty
- having and showing empathy for others.
