This is a bit of a ‘golden oldie’ taken from country star, and CMA award winner, Martina McBride’s 2007 album Waking Up Laughing. It popped up on a random playlist on my iPod and I remembered what a good song it was and how it seems to speak into the current pandemic – especially the words of the chorus:
God is great,
But sometimes life ain’t good
When I pray
It doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
I do it anyway.
Martina encourages us to push through the discouraging and painful times in life and give it another go. It is a song of hope and strength. It is a song about love and loving other people no matter what is going on. It is a song about how God is still with us during the difficult times. It is a song about living life whatever comes our way.
I have several of McBride’s albums, she a great following in the USA but largely seems to be under the radar in the UK – though I did get the chance to see her in the Indigo 2 around the time this album was released. McBride’s claim to fame is that she was a backing singer to Garth Brooks.

You can spend your whole life building
Something from nothin’
One storm can come and blow it all away
Build it anywayYou can chase a dream that seems so out of reach
And you know it might not ever come your way
Dream it anywayGod is great,
But sometimes life ain’t good
When I pray
It doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
I do it anyway. This world’s gone crazy and it’s hard to believe
That tomorrow will be better than today
Believe it anywayYou can love someone with all your heart
For all the right reasons
In a moment they can choose to walk away
Love ’em anywayGod is great,
But sometimes life ain’t good
When I pray
It doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
I do it anyway. You can pour your soul out singing a song you believe in
That tomorrow they’ll forget you ever sang
Sing it anyway
Yeah, sing it anywayI sing, I dream
I love
Anyway
