It’s always a pleasure to welcome our friends Dan and Monique to Billericay to play a House Gig at the Rectory on Friday 16 June 2023 at 19.30 hrs (Doors at 18.45 hrs). This replaces the gig scheduled for September 2020 which was postponed then cancelled!! This will be one of very few live shows they have planned for 2023 (and beyond) so it is one definitely not to be missed!.
Tinderbox are two of our favourite musicians and they are really lovely people too (as well as being accomplished musicians) and we are delighted to have them playing in Billericay again – they’ve always been very well received in the past. You may remember: Saint Marys in 2014; my Gig In The Garden in 2016 and the intimacy of a Rectory House Gig in 2018.
We’ve seen them several times over the years both locally, at the Wessex Folk Festival as well as at the smallest venue in London (the basement of the Green Note in Camden). A Tinderbox gig is not to be missed!
About Tinderbox
Bournemouth based Tinderbox are an award-winning acoustic duo featuring the ‘honey-like’ vocals of Monique Houraghan and the amazing intricate finger guitar technique of Dan Tucker.
With five studio albums and one live album under their belts, Tinderbox have amassed an impressive catalogue of self-penned music. Inspired by artists as diverse as James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Counting Crows, their songs explore a myriad of poignant themes that range from war and the environment to lost friendship, global travel and (of course) love. Their most recent album 2017’s All Grown Up was runners-up in FolkWords Best Albums of 2017 Awards.
BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson has described Tinderbox’s music as “Gorgeous”. R2 Magazine’s Dai Jeffries branded the music “Outstanding … refreshingly natural” and FolkWords columnist Tim Carroll commended the “… highly accomplished musicianship; with a deliciously pure voice and a lush embroidery of strings”. Acoustic Magazine labels their music “Lovely, hooky and mellow.” R2 magazine suggests their tunes “Stick in the memory from the start.”
‘Seeing this band live will be an experience which remains long in the memory.’ Maverick Magazine
After meeting in North Yorkshire in 1997, Monique enticed Dan to return to her hometown of Dublin where they worked on writing and performing new material for the next four years. They then travelled the world for two years taking their sweet and mellow sound to countries such as America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
Since settling in Bournemouth in 2004, Tinderbox have performed countless headline shows to capacity crowds. Additionally, they have opened for many international acts including: Joan Armatrading, 10cc, Hazel O’Connor, Cara Dillon, Ralph McTell and Squeeze’s Chris Difford as well as appearing at a host of Folk Festivals right across the UK. In May 2010, after returning from a successful tour of the USA they went on to win an award for ‘The Best European Group’ in Caceres, Spain.
In recent years Tinderbox’s music has featured in numerous television and film projects including ‘Aisling’s Diary’ (RTE1, Ireland), ‘Dr G Medical Examiner’ (Discovery Channel, USA), ‘Trinity’ (Channel 5 Entertainment, USA) and independent US feature film ‘The Bilbee Boys’ to name a few.
About House Gigs
A House Gig provides a unique experience for both artists and audience in an intimate setting and is quite unlike any other gig you will attend. That’s why artists are always asking to come back! Some of my most favourite gigs have taken place in my lounge!
A House Gig is a private invitation to the Rectory from Paula and me. You can contact me on paul@revpacman.com if you’d like to be considered for a place and I’ll get back to you to confirm your attendance. Maximum two tickets per person – spaces are limited! I usually receive more applicants than places, but I do set up a reserve list.
Doors will open at 7.00 pm (or 6.45 pm if you’re so excited you can’t wait, or you simply want more drinking time!) and Tinderbox will play two sets from 7.30 pm (ish!). We’ll provide some hot food during the interval (with a veggie option) all for the amazing price of £20 (payable in advance, please – I’ll give you details about how to pay when your invitation is confirmed). There will also be a reasonably priced honesty bar available!
A House Gig is a cosy (!?) affair and, whilst we provide seating for most people, some of you will be required to sit on the floor – we’ll provide a comfy cushion for you (we have plenty of these) – so you might want to dress accordingly! Just so you know, we always encourage folk to swap around for the second set!
Please remember a House Gig is a listening event rather than a talking event. Please read the article below before you apply to come!
PROCEEDS From this event will be given to the Purple Community Fund working in The Philippines. I spent three weeks there in July/August 2019 working alongside some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in Asia, many of whom live on the largest rubbish dump in the world.
