A number of people have been asking for updates about life in Cyprus the ‘Island of Love’ from January 2024 as I serve as Chaplain to the Anglican Church of Paphos (and from 9 March 2025 as Archdeacon in Cyprus) so, rather than emailing or messaging people individually, I’ve decided to create a diary page which I will add to on a regular basis – the most recent post will be at the top! I’ll try not to be boring (or envy inducing) but you may want to come and have a peek from time to time!

Needless to say, we are missing our family and friends in the UK. If you’re the praying kind, do say a prayer for Paula and I as we face the challenge (and adventure) of settling into a new ministry in a new country in a new culture and making new friends. Be sure to keep Ben & Beth and Annabel in your prayers too.

I continue to post regular articles on this page revpacman.com You can also follow me on the following social media platforms:

Do get in touch if you’re planning to visit Cyprus, it would be great to have a catch up. A few of our friends have done so already!

Be safe and be blessed.

SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2025
A famous win over the All Blacks – the first at Twickers for 13 years and the first since the RWC Semi in 2019. A game of ebb and flow which really wasn’t settled until the last 10 mins after a sensational comeback from England. Tries from Ollie Lawrence, Sam Underhill, Fraser Dingwall and Tom Roebuck, as well as 13 points from the boot of George Ford, helped England regain the Hillary Shield. As in previous weeks the ‘Pom Squad’ (bench) made the difference as they extend their winning run to 10 games. Ford was my MOM but Ben Earl came a very close second. Looking forward to the Argies next week!!#EnglandRugby #EnglandRU #WearTheRose #QuiltersNations #ENGNZL

WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2025
This morning we had a scary 5.7 earthquake with 3 after shocks. I was on the operating table prepped for a cataract operation and they had to evacuate the building. Glad they hadn’t started – that could have been dodgy. Thought I was having a violent reaction to medication! However, the op went ahead after an hour delay. The surgeon wasn’t concerned because he knew I was a priest. “We’ll be ok, we have Jesus on our side!” Home now and safe!

MONDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2025
Great to catch up Dr Phil and Carole Brown from #Chelmsford #UK almost 12 months to the day when I performed a Christian blessing to celebrate 38 years of marriage at Ayia Kyriaki #Paphos. We’ve kept in touch since then and loved having a face to face.

SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER
Gotta be honest, this match is a clash with #SUNARS so will have to watch this on catch up!
#EnglandRugby #EnglandRU #QuiltersNations #ENGFIJ

A tough game today against the league leaders on a rich run of form and who haven’t conceded a goal in a record eight games. We’ll do well to get some kind of result, but we’re at home so … watch this space!

#SAFC #SunderlandAFC #Mackems #BlackCats #HawayTheLads #TilTheEnd #Sunderland #SUNARS #PremierLeague

What. A. Game! Arsenal conceded their first goal in 13 hours and we are the first team to score 2 against them this season. We had them on the rack and panicking but they came back well – though we gifted them the equaliser. Brobbey scored a wonder goal to force the draw and deny our title rivals 3 points. A massive point and a refusal to crumble under immense Arsenal pressure. A few had great games some not at their best but Ballard was immense – again – and my MOM. Third will do very nicely. Thank you.

FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2025
I unexpectedly found myself being quoted in this week’s Church Times. I also find myself amongst esteemed company!

WEDNESDAY 5 NOVEMBER 2025
Not a great first half, better in the second with great defensive performances. No fireworks tonight (see what I did there?) but what a result against a ‘La Liga’ giant. Champions league history made and another milestone in the short life of this club. Form isn’t bad either P4 W1 D2 L1. And look at the quality of the teams below us in the league standings! The dream continues. Congratulations, Derrick Luckassen! The Dutchman is among Europe’s top – selected to the UEFA Champions League Team of the Week.

MONDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2025
Well that was a solid draw after a poor opening 20 mins. But we could have won that – we bossed them second half and won all the stats. We’re looking tough to beat and we remain unbeaten at home. Xhaka was immense again. My MOM. He’s the best midfielder in the league at the moment – gotta be signing of the season! And we’re in fourth!! Is it too much to be dreaming of qualifying for Europe this season?#SAFC #SunderlandAFC #Mackems #BlackCats #HawayTheLads #TilTheEnd #Sunderland #SUNEVE

SUNDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2025 ALL SOULS DAY
Today, Christians and churches across the world are marking All Souls’ Day. Also known as the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, it is a day we remember those who have died. Whether someone you knew has died recently or long ago, lighting a candle can often help us pause, pray and think of them for a few moments. You can also light a candle online on The Church of England website at buff.ly/3U9n5j7

MONDAY 27 OCTOBER 2025
I’m in Amman, Jordan this week to represent the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf at the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem Majma (Synod). Bishop Sean is unable to attend and so I’m going in his place! I’ll have to be on my very best behaviour. The Diocese of Jerusalem supports twenty-eight congregations extending across five countries/territories: Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf is in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East, under the leadership of Archbishop Hosam. I’m looking forward to worshipping with my colleagues, sharing conversation, learning more about their mission and ministry and the joys and sorrows they experience. I’m sure it will be a humbling experience as I hear stories of the struggles many churches, leaders and congregations, have been through in recent times. You can a longer review and view some photo’s on my Facebook page or on the Diocesan website here

SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER 2025 BIBLE SUNDAY

https://revpacman.com/2025/10/26/bible-sunday-2025/

SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER 2025
Unbelievable Geoff! Beating Chelsea away. Resolute defending, playing lightning-quick, counter attacking, passionate, confident football. Possession was low but its goals that count! And sitting second in the league! But … we still haven’t played anyone decent yet!
#HawayTheLads #TilTheEnd #SAFC #Sunderland #SunderlandAFC #Mackems #BlackCats #CHESUN #MatchDay #EPL #PremierLeague

FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER 2025
Saints take the win. An entertaining contest but Sarries form continues to be erratic. Beaten by Quins, hammered Sharks now a loss against the Saints. Go figure! The hosts maintain their unbeaten start with four tries for England & Lions winger Tommy Freeman. Sarries secure a try bonus point. Now an international break so a few weeks before we go again. #Saracens #Sarries #ComeOnSarries #SarriesFamily

TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER 2025
How that game ended 0-0 is beyond me. Down to 10 men after 3 mins made it difficult. Pafos had the best chances in the game – Luiz was unlucky with 3 attempts on target. All the stats pointed to an away win and this feels like 2 points dropped. #PafosFC #PamePafos #VamosPafos #KAIPAF #UCL

SUNDAY 19 OCTOBER 2025

https://revpacman.com/2025/10/19/how-do-we-measure-success-as-a-christian/

So, my wedding season for 2025 has come to an end. And what a blast it’s been. I’ve had the privilege of officiating at weddings, blessings and renewal of vows. I’ve met some amazing people and made some friends along the way. Some gatherings have been large and others more intimate – but each one had its own magic and celebration of love. I’ve officiated on beaches, hotels, wedding venues and churches. I’ve shared moments of great joy and laughter – but not forgotten the serious bits!

I’ve been able to bless couples on their new future together and to speak to them about how the 1 Corinthians 13 love of God can make a difference to their daily lives. Of course, I’ve loved posting the selfies of the happy couples on my FB/X pages and reading the comments folk have made.

I’ve been very ably assisted by a wonderful wedding administrator and several lovely ladies who volunteer to support our wedding ministry – and who work hard to keep me in check! Not an easy task! I must give a shout out to the wedding planners and photo/videographers, too.

Cyprus is known as the ‘Island of Love’ and if you’re thinking about a Christian wedding, blessing or renewal of vows do check out our website or drop me a DM. Who knows … it could be your selfie showing up on my FB/X pages in 2026! https://www.yourcypruswedding.org/

SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER 2025
It was a privilege to officiate at an emotional wedding today for Alex and Leanne from #Kissonerga at Saint Georges Chapel #Chloraka #Paphos surrounded by family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Ionescu.

Love the retro look on our social media posts for Founders Week! Not at our best today. Great first half but under the cosh at times in the second and Wolves squandered some good chances. But a win is a win and our impressive home form continues. After 8 games we are are in seventh and only 1 point behind last seasons champions Liverpool and only 2 points behind 2nd place Man City. Shows what a brilliant start to the season we have had. How did the toon do today?

#HawayTheLads #TilTheEnd #SAFC #Sunderland #SunderlandAFC #Mackems #BlackCats #SUNWOL #FoundersWeek

Didn’t see that coming. What a debut for 19 yr old Noah Caluori – 5 tries and winning a penalty try too. A much deserved man of the match and a complete team performance. Download your copy of the digital programme here https://tinyurl.com/mpbz5e2e

FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER 2025
Well that was fun! Congratulations to Philip and Lara whom I married today at a very full Saint Nicholas’ Church in #Paphos. So full the choir had to stand outside to sing! It was a joy to see some familiar faces and to meet family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Draper. NB. I was vicar in #ChadwellHeath for several years and Philip is from #Romford and Lara #Dagenham! They were in #Wickford when I was in #Billericay! They are now in #Tala #Cyprus and I’m in the next town of #Emba. And, as an aside, Lara was born in #Newcastle and me in #Sunderland. It does seem a very small world at times.

Really great to catch up with the amazing Andrea Bell from #Sunderland soup kitchen this evening – and what a lovely lass she is. Andrea used to live in #Paphos and is here visiting friends. Found out we both grew up in #Silksworth and both went to #Ryhope School and know the same people! The world really is a small place. Andrea does some wonderful work supporting families – give the soup kitchen a follow and drop them a donation. Every little helps.

THURSDAY 16 OCTOBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Michael and Laura from #MerthyrTydfil #UK at Saint Nicholas church #Paphos this afternoon and to celebrate their love with family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Williams.

SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2025
For 50 years, Prisons Week has encouraged Christians everywhere to pray for prisoners and their families, victims of crime and their communities and those working or volunteering in the criminal justice system. Prisons Week 2025 runs from 12- 18 October. This year we are invited to remember that, whatever your circumstances, or the place in which you stand, Gods word is not chained. https://www.prisonsweek.org/

https://revpacman.com/2025/10/13/the-ten-lepers/

A disappointing Derby Day defeat against our sarf London rivals. Sarries couldn’t cope with their kicking game or find a way past a resolute Quins defence. A second half try wasn’t enough after a lucky Quins score kept them ahead. Congrats to Quins. Your day again – makes it 3 in a row. Let’s see what happens on the return fixture at the StoneX!!

FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER 2025
Such a joy to officiate at a very special and intimate wedding for Peter and Suzanne from #Norfolk #UK at the lovely Saint Nicholas church in #KatoPaphos #Cyprus. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Vince for their new life together. X

THURSDAY 9 OCTOBER 2025
It was a privilege for me to lead the Sunset Memorial Service yesterday evening as Padre to the #Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion, as we launched the 2025 Poppy Appeal. ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning: we will remember them’.

WEDNESDAY 8 OCTOBER 2025
Well that was fun! Such a joy to officiate at the wedding of Michael and Sharon from #Bournville #UK at the historic Panagia Odigitria church in #Kouklia #Paphos #Cyprus and to meet their family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Holden for their new life together.

TUESDAY 7 OCTOBER 2025

MONDAY 6 OCTOBER 2025
We hold our annual PET SERVICE in the grounds of #AyiaKyriaki, #KatoPaphos on Monday 6 October at 4.00 pm.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Do come along and bring your pet with you – all shapes and sizes welcome – whether on a lead, carried or in a cage!! We also take a few moments to remember pets no longer with us.

NB. For those of you who are wondering, this statue is by Frank C. Gaylord and is located at the Saint Peter and Paul Cemetery in Naperville, Chicago. If you look closely, you can see a sculpted bird behind the real bird! I saw this on Google Images and I just had to use it!!

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER 2025

Well … it was gonna happen to us at some point but didn’t expect it today. Utd turned up to play! We were solid from 30 mins when Ballard came on but the damage was done by then. We’re still in sixth place though!

A quite convincing win from the Sarries. Farrell slotting in as if he’s never been away bringing class and a steady hand into midfield and his kicking. Jack Bracken played a blinder on his debut, with two tries, and Tom Willis is a monster at number eight, winning a deserved MOM.

THURSDAY 2 OCTOBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Daniel and Lily from #Wakefield #UK at Saint Nicholas church #Paphos this afternoon and to celebrate their love with family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Walker.

TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Paul and Chloe from #HeskethBank #UK at the Elysium Hotel in #Paphos this afternoon. Great to meet family and friends who helped make this a very special and emotional wedding. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs McDougall. NB. The grooms family hail from #Liverpool and knew one of my previous places of work ‘The Big House’ in #Walton! I’m sure I met one of them in there!!

This is, without any shadow of doubt, a ‘David vs Goliath’ game of football. Can’t wait to see how #PafosFC perform. Got my ticket and a seat on the supporters coach. Bring it on! #PamePafos Picked up my new shirt this afternoon!

MATCH Well … it was always going to be an uphill battle against European giants such as Bayern Munchen. We were sloppy for a couple of goals (Be good to see the replays on TV). To be fair Kane, Diaz and Jackson looked sharp but Orsic scored the goal of the night. We’ll have more fruitful nights in Europe but we were beaten by the better team. PS we weren’t the only team to concede 5 and some of those teams have a long established European pedigree.

Carcedo’s post match comments:

On Bayern: “We knew that right now they’re probably the best team in Europe. We tried to be competitive, but we couldn’t manage it. They have so much quality.”

On what he takes away besides Oršić’s goal: “It was a beautiful goal, we wanted to combine it with a good result. Our task was difficult. We tried to do our best. In the next game, we’ll face an opponent at our level and we’ll try to get points.”

On the upcoming game against AEK: “It’s an away match, our goal is victory. It’s an important game for the league and our aim is to stay at the top.”

SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 2025
WOW! What an amazing start to the season. Can’t believe we’re THIRD in the league. First time since 2001. You might be interested to know that Sunderland’s 11 points in first six games is the best start by a promoted side in 13 years!

The #RedRoses take on Canada in the Women’s Rugby World Cup final #RWC2025 #WomensRugby #WomensRugbyWorldCup2025  What a great game of rugby that was. The Red Roses have played well throughout the tournament and that victory was well deserved.

FRIDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2025
Well, that was great fun! A wonderful Renewal of Marriage Vows celebration for Paul & Harriett from #Southampton #UK at Saint George’s Chapel #Chloraka #Paphos #Cyprus 27 years to the day from their wedding in #Cheshunt Lovely to celebrate with a lively gathering of family and friends. Prayers of blessing for Mr & Mrs Jackson. NB. Scott T referred to this as a ‘fake wedding’ but he was called out and changed his mind!!

Well these were pretty good. Excellent musicians (though the vocalist was hit and miss) with one of the best drummers I’ve seen in a long time – and what a voice. Love the Led Zep / ACDC interlude at the encore! This set had banger after banger. What’s not to like?

THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Neil and Abbie-Leigh from #Telford #UK at Saint Nicholas church #Paphos this afternoon. Great to meet family and friends who helped make this a very special and emotional wedding. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Birch.

WEDNESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2025
Such a privilege to baptise Gabriella from #Darwen #UK at Saint Nicholas Church in #KatoPaphos #Cyprus today. Gabriella’s parents, Anyhony and Antonia, were married here! It was a joy to welcome Gabriella into the family of the Church and to encourage her parents and godparents to set the example in bringing her up in the Christian faith. Praying continued blessings on Gabriella for her growth in faith and for her family too.

MONDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Louis and Michelle originally from #UK but living in #Paphos at Ayia Kyriaki this afternoon. Great to meet family and friends who helped make this a very special and emotional wedding. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Stavrinidis (owners of The Fat Fig in Chloraka).

SUNDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2025 Harvest Sunday
I didn’t preach today but here’s a #harvest sermon from a few years ago.

https://revpacman.com/2015/10/04/the-harvest-through-jesus-eyes/

We prayed this prayer today at all of our services in the Anglican Church of Paphos.

A backs to the wall 1-1 draw for the #BlackCats after Reinildos stupid sending off. Think the game was ours for the taking but playing with 10 men for 60 mins worked against us. Gutted for Rigg who made way for Ballard – he looked good up until then. Villa’s goal was a lucky strike and an uncharacteristic error from Roefs. Isidor just keeps on scoring. We don’t look out of place in the premier league and we move up to seventh.

SATURDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2025
Revd Lesley was ordained to the Distinctive Diaconate today at Saint Pauls Cathedral in #Nicosia and will serve in the Anglican Church of #Paphos #Cyprus Read more here https://www.cypgulf.org/revd-lesley-ordained-to…/

FRIDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2025
Gotta be honest, I was more of a Spandau Ballet fan than Duran Duran but Paula was in love with John Taylor. Looking forward to a nostalgic evening of songs from my youth!

An excellent sound-a-like band. But John Taylor the Bass player isn’t! Lead singer had a great attitude in his banter and carried the songs well. Realised how few hits/bangers Duran Duran really have. The ‘fillers’ as they were seemed weak in comparison. Anyway, enjoyed a sing-a-long to the ones I knew.

WEDNESDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2025
Brilliant result. Up against it when Bruno was sent off and Luiz went off injured. But some resolute defending and selfless reorganisation earned a very good point against a team playing in their 21st consecutive champions league. #PafosFC #PamePafos

TUESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2025
It can be a very small world at times – when a former Rector of #Billericay marries a couple from #LeighOnSea – just along the road in #Essex #UK It was a joy to meet John and Ann and to officiate at an intimate ceremony at Saint Nicholas Church in Kato #Paphos #Cyprus this afternnoon. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Hopwood.

MONDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2025
What a joy to officiate at the marriage of Craig and Charlotte from #Guildford #UK at Ayia Kyriaki #Paphos #Cyprus this afternoon. Great to meet family and friends who helped make the occasion very special indeed. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Goodwin.

SATURDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2025
This is a good result away from home (a clean sheet too) especially as the Eagles are undefeated in 15 at home, have won two trophies and are in Europe. An mazing display from Roefs who deserved his MOM. Defence was solid too. On this form we could avoid relegation!

FRIDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2025
25 years to the day and time Claire and Craig from #Bodmin #UK celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary by renewing their marriage vows at Ayia Kyriaki Church #Paphos on Friday 12 September at 1.00 pm in the presence of their children, family and friends. It was such a joy to share in such a special occasion. Many congratulations Mr & Mrs Russon. Here’s to the next 25 years!

WEDNESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2025
So … after 26 years together Gary and Theresa from Great Dunmow (in my old stomping ground of #Essex) decided it was time to ‘tie the knot’ at Saint Nicholas’ church in #Paphos. It was an intimate affair witnessed by their four children – with lots of laughter along the way. Prayers of blessing for Mr & Mrs Upjohn for their ‘new’ life together.

We won all the stats but it was a much tougher game than it looks on paper. Incredible comeback with a 96th minute winner #TilTheEnd Thought Xhaka, Alderete and Roefs in particular were outstanding – three unbelievable summer signings. Must continue making the SOL a fortress this season – that should be enough to see us stay up. NB. Wilson Isidor’s injury time goal means the #BlackCats win their opening two Premier League home games for the first time in 23 years… last done in 2001/02!!

FRIDAY 29 AUGUST 2025
Such a joy to officiate at the Marriage Service of Michael and Roxanne from #Birmingham #UK at Saint Nicholas’ Church in #Paphos and to meet their family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Pitt for their new life together.

Michael and Roxanne chose to include the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi in their service:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Two weddings ‘back to back’ and this was one of those unforgettable weddings when I married Christian (a fellow Mackem) and Clare – living in #Rugby #Uk at Saint Nicholas’ church in #Paphos this afternoon. It was also good to meet family and friends from the North East – some #SAFC fans and some #NUFC fans but, as you can see from the selfies I was able to show our allegiance to the #BlackCats in a subtle and not so subtle way. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs McMullen for their new life together. NB. I forget to mention that the bride walked down the aisle to ‘I can’t help falling in love with you!’ If you know, you know! #HawayTheLads “Sunderland take over everywhere we go!!”

THURSDAY 28 AUGUST 2025
It was such a privilege for me to lead the Funeral Service for the late David Knell in #Polis #Cyprus this morning. To be able to celebrate his life and commend him into God’s merciful keeping. It was also good to remind those present of the hope and comfort God promises to give us in, and through, difficult times in our lives.

David served in the RAF for many years and I used ‘The Airborne Prayer’ as part of my final blessing – a prayer he would have heard a Padre use on many occasions.

May the defence of the Most High be above and beneath, around and within us, in our going out and our coming in, in our rising up and in our going down, all our days and all our nights, until the dawn when the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings for the peoples of the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The draw for the UEFA Champions League ‘league phase’ was made in Monaco this evening. Pafos FC are in some amazing company.

TUESDAY 26 AUGUST 2025
I’ve started to follow Pafos FC in recent months (my local team) and whilst I’ve not been able to attend many games, I’ve watched them on TV. In recent weeks they have playing playing in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds beating Tel Aviv, Dynamo Kiev and. on Tuesday, Redstar Begrade to quality for the Champions League ‘proper’. Quite an amazing achievement for a club that was only formed in 2014. I went to the game on Tuesday with my mate Andy Hoskins from Aberdare – who came over especially for the game.  We travelled on a supporters coach and, as you can imagine, the atmosphere was electric from start to finish. It was a 1-1 draw on the night but Pafos won 3-2 on aggregate.

A disappointing game. Lots of possession and territory and looking very comfortable on the ball, but our crosses etc., into the box were very poor and we fluffed the early chances we had. Still … there is always next week!!

THURSDAY 21 AUGUST 2025
Really great to spend the day in Nicosia with Bishop Sean and Jenny – enjoying friendship, fellowship, food and fun (how’s that for alliteration?). The poster in the background is one of several interesting ones dotted around their lovely house.

WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2025
Great to catch up with the Dawson Family, Alister Nicola Joseph and Bella from #Billericay here in sunny #Paphos and to catch up on all the gossip! The Dawsons were great supporters of Messy Church at Emmanuel Church Billericay

A really great evening at More Social #Kouklia #Paphos with music from the very talented Rain Abraham. Loved his eclectic 70s acoustic vibe. The legendary platter went down well too.

SATURDAY 16 AUGUST 2025
What more can you ask for on your return to the Premier League? The lads were superb today. Full credit to them, Le Bris and his team. An amazing feat to do a job on a decent West Ham side with bags of talent and experience. What a day! #SAFC #HawayTheLads NB. Great atmosphere at the Frog & Toad in Coral Bay.

Happy #NationalMackemDay to all my #Mackem #Marras in #Sunderland and further afield. Don’t forget to celebrate this auspicious occasion and be sure to suck some Sarsaparilla tablets, enjoy a bowl of Panackelty, eat some Stottie Cake, finished off with a Pink Slice, and a slurp of Double Maxim Ale. #NationalMackemDay #MackemDay #HawayTheLads #TheGloriousTwelfth #Mackems

Chuck Girard, one of the founders of CCM (contemporary Christian music) in the early 70s has died aged 81 yrs. At a time when the ‘devils music’ was frowned upon Chuck, and his band Lovesong, broke the mould. My review of the film ‘Jesus Revolution’ gives the background to his amazing story, music and the impact he had. #ChuckGirard #Lovesong #CCM #JesusMovement

SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 2025
Trust us to choose the hottest day of the year so far to have an open house for church members to meet Lesley, and her husband Peter, who will be joining us as curate in #Paphos in September! However the heat or humidity didn’t stop over 50 people joining with us for a great afternoon social.

FRIDAY 8 AUGUST 2025
Such a joy to officiate at the Marriage Service of Daniel and Hannah from #Hinckley #UK at Saint Catherine’s Chapel (such a lovely venue) in Aphrodite Hills #Paphos and to meet their family and friends. Prayers of blessing for the new Mr & Mrs Pope for their new life together. NB. Disappointingly, Dan is a mags supporter but I was able to put aside our differences on this occasion. #sixinarow #HawayTheLads

TUESDAY 5 AUGUST 2025
Great to catch up with the Hoskins family again (Andy, Alison, Emily and Megan). We met last year when they were on holiday, kept in touch and met them again!  We enjoying a great meal at Yialos Taverna watching the sun go down.

SATURDAY 2 AUGUST 2025
A very disappointing end to the Lions test series, as we fall to a comprehensive defeat to the Wallabies in Sydney. The clean sweep is gone! It was a chaotic match, with a rain delay of over 40 minutes just after half time – which changed the game as far as tactical substitutions go and how longer players would be able to stay on the pitch given the extended break. Several Lions were forced off injured including Itoje and Ryan and this had a huge impact on our line out. Not gonna turn into a ‘whingeing pom’ though. The Wallabies turned us over good and proper! Skelton and White played on the edge and got under our skin. Fair dinkum to them. They deserved the win. #BritishAndIrishLions #BIL #Lions2025 #Lions #LionsRugby #WeGoBeyond

FRIDAY 1 AUGUST 2025
Eee By Gum! Happy Yorkshire Day to all my Yorkshire friends. How will you be celebrating? #YorkshireDay #WhiteRoseDay

THURSDAY 31 JULY 2025
It was such a privilege to baptise Eliose (4yrs) at Saint Stephen’s #Tala #Paphos #Cyprus this morning. Parents Andy and Emilia are living in #Texas and they have. links with Paphos and #Billericay – long story!! It was such a joy to welcome Eloise into the family of the church and to encourage her parents and godparents to set the example in bringing her up in the Christian faith. We also thought about flying cats and answers to prayer. It was good to spend time with family and friends afterwards.

We are safe at the moment – we’re down by the coast it’s in the mountains above Limassol where the fires are raging the worst – the other side of the mountains. The Paphos area was badly affected by the wild fires last year, They are the worst fires in living memory and some of the news reports are devastating. However, it is scorching hot – reaching 45′ in some areas today – and that doesn’t help matters.

Congratulations to the new Mr & Mrs Chadwick who I had the pleasure of marrying today at St Nics in Paphos. Daniel is from Huddersfield (Ben and Beth met at Huddersfield University) and Ann-Margareth is part Cypriot part French – both met working in Yorkshire! Prayers of blessing to bride and groom for their new life together.

FRIDAY 11 JULY 2025
It’s been another scorcher and busy with a project which I’ll show you when its finished! In the meantime, got my tickets for this. One things is for sure …”The sun is shining in the sky – there ain’t a cloud in sight!” The question I’m asking is: “Will they sing ‘Mr Blue Sky’ when the sun is out or will they sing it as an encore when it’s gone dark?” Watch this space for the answer!!

TUESDAY 7 JULY 2025
It’s gonna be a hot one as the Civil Defence issues heat safety guidance as temperatures set to reach 41°C. You can read about it in the Cyprus News

It was a privilege to lead this service today for the late Phil Rugg – and such a joy to meet his family and friends. Phil was an ex Navy Helicopter Pilot and so we listened to the Naval Hymn ‘Eternal Father, Strong To Save’ said the Naval Prayer and the Bible Reading was Jesus calming the storm from Mark 4. I spoke about how, just like the disciples, we can sometimes lose our faith when the storm of death surrounds us. We thought about how Jesus calmed the storms, first the storm on the lake, then the storms of their heart with those simple words: Peace! Be still! Prayers for Willie, Chris and Andrew and family and friends who mourn Phil’s death.

And yes, it was a hot afternoon!

SUNDAY 6 JULY 2025
This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Stephen’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 6 July 2025. The Bible reading was Luke 10:1-11 and 16-20.

It was good to meet with the church council of Saint John’s Deryneia on Thursday evening, in my guise as Archdeacon, as we began the process of looking for a successor to Fr Peter. Stayed overnight with friends Clive and Anna.

TUESDAY 1 JULY 2025
Diocesan Evening Prayer: 1 July 2025. “During times of personal suffering we need to draw closer to Jesus, but we also need the faith and support of those around us.”

Really special for Paula and I to catch up with my #Billericay mate Mark Waller and his wife Eunice at the Kastro Restaurant (great meal BTW) in #Pissouri #Cyprus where they are staying on Holiday. It was good to catch up on life in Billericay and Cyprus and great to see them both looking so well.

SUNDAY 29 JUNE 2025
Some of you might be interested to know that I was ordained 28 years ago today – 29 June 1997. What an amazing journey of joys and sorrows and tears and laughter it’s been for me and my family and the congregations I’ve served in #Handforth (Chester Diocese), #ChadwellHeath and #Billericay (both Chelmsford Diocese) and now in #Paphos (Cyprus and the Gulf) and more recently as Archdeacon here in #Cyprus. The adventure continues. Blessings to all.

This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 29 June 2025. There were a number of Bible readings.

SATURDAY 28 JUNE 2025
A bit of a hot one! But still a privilege to perform the Wedding Ceremony for Lee and Sussana from #Leeds on the beach at #CoralBay #Paphos #Cyprus witnessed by their children, family and friends. Praying Gods blessing on the happy couple for their future together.

FRIDAY 27 JUNE 2025
It was such a privilege to lead this service today for the late Jim Ross – and such a joy to meet his family and friends. As I said at the service we don’t always have the answers to the questions of how and why loved ones are taken from us, but we trust in God, believing that he bears our tears and loneliness, that he hears our pain, that he hears the questions that have no answers. That he comforts us in our grief when we find ourselves in the darkest places. Prayers for Janette, Stuart and Simone, for David and grandchildren Gracie and Vinnie and family and friends who mourn Jim’s death. May the hope we have in Jesus give them strength to face the future.

Guess where I’m going tonight? Gotta say they were very good.  Great musicianship and sound, not too pretentious (as Coldplay can be) and each song was just banger after banger!  Well worth checking out.

THURSDAY 26 JUNE 2025
What great fun it was to perform a service for the Renewal of Wedding Vows for Peppar and Dean from #Birkenhead (not too far from where we used to live on the #Wirral) at Saint George’s Chapel #Chloraka #Paphos praying God’s richest blessing on them for their future together.

SUNDAY 22 JUNE 2025
This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 22 June 2025. The Bible reading was 1 Kings 19:1-15a.

We made a last minute decision to go to see The Lack of Commitments at Tala Amphitheatre.  I’m so glad we did – they were simply brilliant. LOC label themselves the ‘saviours of soul’ and are an eleven piece UK based band with great musicianship, stunning vocals and infectious energy. Gotta say the sound was superb too. With a set, looks and ethos strongly based on Alan Parker’s masterpiece film The Commitments they played a selection of classic soul and Motown hits to make up a belting set – with some wonderful interpretations on non-soul songs that became soul!  Wish I’d seen them earlier on the tour – would definitely have gone to see them again. Well worth looking our for on the road.

SATURDAY 21 JUNE 2025
The Wandering Hearts have established themselves as one of the UK’s most cherished Americana groups. I’ve been a fan since the 2018 release of ‘Wild Silence.’ They released their new album today: ‘Déjà Vu (We Have All Been Here Before)’. It’s a reimagining of the classic 1970 album ‘Déjà Vu’ by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. 55 years after the original’s release. Whilst not a note-for-note recreation, it pays homage to the original. Classics such as ‘Our House’, ‘Woodstock’, and ‘Teach Your Children’ are given a fresh sound and tracks such as ‘Almost Cut My Hair’ and ‘Helpless’ have a different feel as they are being sung by female voices. I highly recommend this album whether your a hearts fan or a fan of the original.

FRIDAY 20 JUNE 2025
A great night at the Fat Fig with Chris Andre – brother of Peter! We’ve seen Chris a few times and he’s a quite excellent musician.  Well worth checking out – he plays local most nights of the week. Had a great Meze here too, not too much of each course and very tasty!

THURSDAY 19 JUNE 2025
Think I need a ‘do not disturb’ sign on my office door! How about this from the Lions captain:

“I try to have a daily amount of time that I spend reading the Bible or praying, ideally both,” explains Maro Itoje when asked about the source of his strength.

Captaining British and Irish Lions Lions Rugby team on their current tour of #Australia, he continues to be open about the importance of his faith.

“The humility that I have tried to embody throughout my life,” he tells the BBC, “definitely comes from knowing that everything I have has been a gift, not by my own doing, but by the guy upstairs.”

WEDNESDAY 18 JUNE 2025
Not a bad first 6 but December looks horrible … Still we’re assured of 6 points when we play the mags!

What a privilege to officiate at a very emotional Renewal of Vows for Gill and Richard from #Margate #UK on their 25th Wedding Anniversary today at Saint Nicholas’ Chapel in #Paphos #Cyprus Gill and Richard have been together over 40 years (were divorced in between and remarried and celebrate 25 years together. No wonder it was an emotional time for them). I pray God’s richest blessing on them for their future years together.

SATURDAY 14 JUNE 2025
My dad, Tony Carr, would have been 95 yrs old today. He had a hard life as a miner from aged 14 – glad I didn’t have to follow in his footstep’s. He was disabled by a roof fall ‘down the pit’ at the young age of 47, spending the rest of his life mostly bedridden until his death aged 89 in 2020. A strong heart kept him going. Deeply missed and never forgotten.

This is a prayer from Bishop Sean that we are praying across our diocese. Please join us in praying for peace.

FRIDAY 13 JUNE MY 63rd BIRTHDAY
On my lonesome again – Paula in UK – just me and Dylan. An early morning walk (7.30 am and 25’ and 80% humidity) to Sandy Beach at #Lemba (Dylan’s fave) then a walk along the coast to the newly created #Alyki Beach in #Chloraka – it wasn’t too long ago this was a car park – but its sure to be popular because of its location. #Paphos #Cyprus

Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Nice to be remembered. Another year round the sun brings me to 63 yrs old! Where has the time gone? I still feel a bairn at heart!

THURSDAY 12 JUNE 2025
Led my first official meeting as Archdeacon in Cyprus with clergy and lay ministers on the island at Saint Barnabas in Limassol.  Can’t tell you how nervous I was.  It seemed to go well. Folk were warm and generous towards me, the Q&A was insightful and I’m told an ‘agenda’ was very welcome indeed!

TUESDAY 10 JUNE 2025
It was such a joy to officiate at a renewal of vows service at Ayia Kyriaki, Paphos, for Shan and Kerry Nissiotis from South Africa on their 30th Wedding Anniversary. The service was a complete surprise to Kerry as Shan was able to keep it a secret! Praying God’s richest blessing on Shan and Kerry for many more years to come.

MONDAY 9 JUNE 2025 KATAKLYSMOS
Pentecost Monday, also known as Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood, is a vibrant and unique celebration in Cyprus. Held annually 50 days after Easter, it is a lively mix of religious traditions and cultural festivities. The festival combines ancient mythology, Christian symbolism, and modern entertainment, making it one of Cyprus’s most anticipated events.

Kataklysmos, meaning “flood” in Greek, traces its roots to both biblical and ancient Greek traditions. The festival commemorates the Great Flood from the story of Noah’s Ark, as well as the mythological deluge associated with the goddess Aphrodite. Water plays a central role in Kataklysmos festivities, symbolizing purification, renewal, and life. Coastal towns and villages, host the most elaborate celebrations.

While Kataklysmos is a time for celebration, it also includes religious observances. For Christians, it also celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit during Pentecost. This blend of influences creates a rich cultural tapestry that unites communities across Cyprus. Church services and processions honour the spiritual significance of Pentecost. Priests bless the waters, and congregations gather to pray and reflect.

Minister calls for water conservation during Pentecost Celebrations!

SUNDAY 8 JUNE 2025 PENTECOST SUNDAY
This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 8 June 2025. The Bible reading was Acts 1:1-21 and John 14:8-17 & 25-27.

It was good to have Bishop Sean Semple with us ‘incognito’ at Ayia Kyriaki #Paphos #Cyprus this morning with Jenny and friends Johan and Louise. Obviously, the Bishop was taking the opportunity to check out the new Archdeacon of Cyprus! Hoping I passed the test!!

It was such a privilege to baptise Amy (15 yrs) and Jessica (10 yrs) from Milton Keynes at Ayia Kyriaki #Paphos #Cyprus this morning. Parents Barry and Lyn were married here in 2008 and it was lovely to welcome them back! It was such a joy to welcome Amy and Jessica into the family of the church and to encourage their parents and godparents to set the example in bringing them up in the Christian faith. We also thought about answers to pray and flying cats!

Great to catch up with Mike & Jo & Jake on holiday in #Paphos from #Billericay today. I married Mike & Jo eight years ago and we’ve remained friends ever since. Always good to catch up on family news.

THURSDAY 29 MAY 2025
Today is Paula’s 60th Birthday. She didn’t want a fuss so no photo’s on social media! We spent the day in Omodos with friends Tim and Ann from Essex and had an excellent tour and wine tasting at Oenou Yi Winery – well recommended. They have a wonderful state-of-the-art winery and a view to die for!

In the evening we enjoyed a meal at Tsiokkas – our fave Taverna in Emba. Christos is a great host and serves the best Moussaka in Paphos!

TUESDAY 27 MAY 2025
Wot? No footy? What am I gonna do?

SATURDAY 24 MAY 2025
Today is a day that will remain in my memory for many years to come as a double promotion day!

At 12.00 pm (Cyprus time) in Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Nicosia, I was collated and installed at the new Archdeacon in Cyprus, in a service led by Bishop Sean. Praying that I’ll be able to make a difference through my new responsibilities. To quote Bishop Sean:

“An archdeacon is a critical friend to a bishop,” said Bishop Sean – a confidante, supporter and challenger. Paul, who is also Paphos parish priest, is well-suited to the role. “His parish experience and passion for church growth, mission, and evangelism are well-known, and I look forward to working with him and the clergy and laity of Cyprus to discern how the churches of this island can flourish.

‘May I take this opportunity to thank all of you for your prayers at this significant moment in my ministry and in the life of the parish, the Diocese and my family. A special thank you goes out to those of you who made the effort to attend the service and a thank you to all at the cathedral for your welcome and hospitality and all those who helped organise the service. It is very much appreciated’. I was particularly pleased to have Ben & Beth and Annabel & Dan present from the UK.

You can read more about this service and see many photo’s on the Diocesan website here An Ordination, a Collation—and an anniversary You can also view a video of the service below.

https://youtu.be/CXACxh4gy_k

And, of course, at 5.00 pm (Cyprus time) Sunderland played Sheffield United in the Championship play off final at Wembley. And … we won 2-1. Premiership here we come. Would you believe I said Watson would come on as sub and score the winner 10 mins before he came on!  If you don’t believe me, ask Ben! We watched the game at the Lordos Beach Hotel in Larnaca where we were staying for the weekend.

THURSDAY 22 MAY 2025

SATURDAY 17 MAY 2025
A friend asked if my prior appointment at the Cathedral in Nicosia would be finished in time to give the lads my Archdeacon blessings! The answer is yes! Service is at 12.00 pm and Kick Off is 5.00 pm Cyprus time. Planning to watch in a pub in Larnaca, where we are staying with the family for the weekend.

Always like the underdogs to win – well done the Eagles! Eagles captain, Joel Ward, had the Bible verse Ephesians 3:20 written on his wrist during the FA Cup final: “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Think that was true on this occasion again the might of Man City.

TH
URSDAY 15 MAY 2025
I got to know Peter after I baptised his daughter Arianna last year. He’s from Middlesbrough! Can’t hold that against him – but he became a friend and his death was unexpected and a shock to everyone. Prayers for his family and friends in Cyprus and the UK.
WEDNESDAY 14 MAY 2025
My churchwarden made me wear Red and White at Communion this morning to celebrate Sunderland’s win last night!  Actually, that’s not quite true! Today is a Saint’s Day, when we remembered Saint Matthias (who replaced Judas – Acts 1:21-26) and the liturgical colour was red.  Quite fitting I thought! #SAFC #TilTheEnd #HawayTheLads

Such a joy to officiate at the Wedding of Rachael and Chris at Saint Nicholas Church #Paphos #Cyprus. After 22 years together it was a long time coming! Rachael and Chris are from #Keighley #UK Praying Gods richest blessing on the happy couple for their new life together.

Many of you will know that Ben has struggled with a knee injury for a number of years which was an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture. Sadly, care in the NHS has been very poor, and a reluctance to acknowledge the symptoms has resulted in further damage to his meniscus and the knee joint itself. To cut a long story short, he had an operation today here in Cyprus with a surgeon who specialises in sports injuries. We are praying for a successful operation. It’s been on the go since last year. We are paying for this privately. Ben will be here a month for physio etc.,  Recovery is months away for this type of injury, but we hope he will be well enough to be able to play footie again and won’t have to wear the brace he as done for years. Here is Ben looking pretty cheery post op!

TUESDAY 13 MAY 2025
This club. This crazy, beautiful, mad, unpredictable football club. What an ending. What a header. What a victory. We probably didn’t deserve to win (but it’s about scoring goals) but it ain’t over … til the end! Wembley, we’re coming! #SAFC #TilTheEnd #HawayTheLads

SUNDAY 11 MAY 2025
This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 4 May April 2025. The Bible reading was Acts 9:36-43.

Rev Claire – Bobbie

So you follow people on line, then it turns out they were real 🤣! and living in Cyprus! Here is Archdeacon Paul, who has just preached the Gospel in fine form in the Sunday service we attended on our hols!

Wonderful welcoming people and how lovely to feel Jesus across the world and to find fellowship is the same everywhere 🙏 what an amazing faith we have!!!

Paul worked as a priest but also had a career as a prison officer in HMP Wormwood Scrubs for years!

See Paul’s on line presence (in comments) well worth following … Watch him being installed in the cathedral at the end of the month too.

Lions 2025 Squad
Really liking this squad, obviously, a few unlucky to miss out (such as Prendergast, Farrell, Ford, George, B Curry, J Willis, Lawes, Ritchie and Faletau) but I dare say with injuries we’ll see other call ups. Good choice for skipper and great to see Pollock in the squad. Congratulations to all who’ve been selected and good luck to Andy Farrell, players and coaches.

Pope Leo XIV
Quite extraordinary that the Roman Catholic Church have managed to gather 133 Electoral Cardinals from all over the world to elect a new pope. Meanwhile, five months on, Canterbury diocese are about to start their third attempt to elect a committee, to elect three members of the committee to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury.  Go figure (as they say)!

WEDNESDAY 7 MAY 2025
Conclave

On 7 May 2025, 133 cardinal electors will be locked inside the Sistine Chapel to elect the next Pope. Once the oaths are made and everyone is ordered out only the cardinal electors will remain. From then on, total silence reigns. Breaking the oath results in automatic excommunication — one of the most severe penalties in Canon Law. This graphic explains the election process.

Five years ago today. A COVID funeral with only 10 family members allowed. No meeting beforehand and no wake afterwards. Distress on distress. Those were difficult and challenging times for bereaved families during the pandemic.

Having worked in Liverpool for six years I’ve always had a soft spot for the reds. #YNWA #LFC

I loved how Cody Gakpo celebrated his goal (getting booked in the process!) as he helped #LFC to the Premier League title. His faith has always been strong. At the 2022 World Cup, he and fellow Dutch team mate Memphis Depay led Bible studies for the Holland squad. In a 2023 interview with The Athletic he said: “My faith helps not only my career but my whole life. It’s a lifestyle kind of thing for me. I take the Bible with me every day.” Gakpo posted on his Facebook page …

𝗜 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 🙏🏾✝️

Childhood dream fulfilled — Premier League champions 24/25. So 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 of everyone of the team and everything we’ve achieved. Reds, your love and support made it even more 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 — can’t thank y’all enough. 𝗚𝗼𝗱 guided every step of this journey, and I’m beyond grateful 🏆.

The Sky Bet Championship had their awards evening last night and SAFC were represented. No question that Chris Rigg is the outstanding apprentice in the league. However, I’m not sure Jobe is the young player of the season and, in my view, he’s very lucky to be included in the team of the season – there are more productive midfielders out there. Yes, I’m a fan, but we have to have a sense of realism too.

SATURDAY 26 APRIL 2025
My first of the season! Such a joy to lead a Service of Prayer and Blessing on the Marriage of Curtis and Dauby and to celebrate with friends and family from around the world at Coral Residences, Coral Bay, Paphos. Curtis and Dauby are both from the UK, living in Perth, Australia with a wedding in Cyprus. Praying Gods richest blessing on the happy couple for their new life together.

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 2025
Geoffrey’s Funeral takes place at Saint Stephen’s, Tala on Friday 25 April at 11.00 am followed by interment at the New Cemetery, Tala at 12.15 pm.

UPDATE: It was such a privilege to lead this service today on behalf of the family and friends of the late Geoffrey Taylor, OBE – a member of the Anglican Church of Paphos worshipping at Saint Stephen’s. From humble beginnings, Geoffrey led an amazing life working in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore, finally settling here in Paphos over twenty years ago. In the words of his children Geoffrey’s life was a life filled with faith and was a ‘A Life Well Lived.’ Geoffrey was reunited in death with Denise, his wife of 64 years, who died in 2020.

A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place
It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good times shared
And laughter through the years.
A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure.

MONDAY 21 APRIL 2025
Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88. His life of quiet humility and steadfast service to the poor and marginalised leaves a lasting witness in our world. Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Christ as we mourn his death and especially for our friends and colleagues in the Latin Catholic Church here in Paphos.

There will be a Mass for the eternal repose of Pope Francis’ soul, led by the Latin Catholic Church, in Ayia Kyriaki on Wednesday 23 April 2025 at 12 noon.

SUNDAY 20 APRIL 2025 EASTER SUNDAY

Christos Anesti (Χριστός Ανέστη) “Christ is Risen.”

Alithos Anesti (Aληθώς ανέστη!) “Truly, He is Risen.”

Lord God,
You loved this world so much that you gave your one and
only son that we might be called your children too.
Lord, help us to live in the gladness and grace of Easter Sunday every day.
Let us have hearts of thankfulness for your sacrifice.
Let us have eyes that look upon your grace
and rejoice in our salvation.
Help us to walk in that mighty grace
and tell your good news to the world.
All for your glory do we pray, Lord,
Amen.

SATURDAY 19 APRIL 2025 HOLY SATURDAY

Lord God,
On the Sabbath, Jesus rested.
He was in the grave.
He had finished his work.
To most people’s eyes it looked as if it were all over.
He was dead and buried.
But only as a seed dies when it is planted in the earth.
Not to decay, but to spring to new life.
Teach us to take refuge in you when we are afraid.
Teach us that death is not our end.
Teach us to hope always in you and in the resurrection,
the making of all things new.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

FRIDAY 18 APRIL 2025 GOOD FRIDAY

Lord God,
Jesus cried out to you on the cross,
“Why have you forsaken me?”
You seemed so far from his cry and from his distress.
Those who stood at the foot of the cross wondered where
you were as they saw Jesus mocked and shamed and killed.
Where were you then?
Lord God, we, too, ask where you are when there is trouble
and suffering and death and we cry out to you for help.
Be near to us and save us
so that we may praise you for your deliverance.
Lord God, we wait on Friday for the resurrection of Sunday.
Sometimes our lives seem a succession of Fridays
and we cannot see what is “Good”.
Teach us to call your name as Jesus did.
Make us to trust in you like little children.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THURSDAY 17 APRIL 2025 MAUNDY THURSDAY

Lord God,
You sent your son into the world
and before his hour had come he washed his disciples’ feet.
You had given all things into his hands.
He had come from you and was going to you,
and what did he do?
He knelt down on the floor and washed his friends’ feet.
He was their teacher and their Lord,
yet he washed their feet.
Lord God, help us learn from his example.
Help us to do as he has done for us.
The world will know we are his disciples if we love one another.
Strengthen our hands and our wills for love and for service.
Keep before our eyes the image of your son,
who, being God, became a servant for our sake.
All glory be to him who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

WEDNESDAY 16 APRIL 2025 HOLY WEEK

Lord God,
We tremble to think that it was one of Jesus’
own friends who betrayed him.
One who sat by him, who broke bread with him.
Give us strength, we pray, to walk faithfully with Jesus,
even when the road we walk is rocky,
even when the message of the cross seems like foolishness,
and even when we feel betrayed.
You, Lord, are always faithful.
We stumble.
We become lost.
But you are steady and sure.
Give us the grace to endure our troubles,
and reveal to us the glory of your kingdom.
Through your son, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

On Wednesday evening I attended Evensong at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Nicosia for the farewell service on the Dean, the Very Reverend Jeremy Crocker, giving thanks for the Dean’s decade of service. Dean Jeremy is to assume the post of Associate Minister at St Luke’s Church in Battersea, London. Those present included the the British High Commissioner Michael Tatham and Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland Conor Long (both of whom I was able to speak to afterwards in my new guise as Archdeacon!). Bishop Sean last week announced that Dean Jeremy was to hold the title of Dean Emeritus on relinquishing his post at St Paul’s, thanking him for his “distinguished ministry in this Diocese”.

TUESDAY 15 APRIL 2025 HOLY WEEK

Lord God,
The message of the cross is difficult to take.
How can death give way to life?
How can weakness be strength?
Yet your word says that Jesus, being God,
took on human flesh and suffered the worst kind of death.
How can this be?
This message is indeed difficult to take.
But your foolishness is wiser than our wisdom.
Your weakness is greater than our strength.
Help us to know that none of us can boast before you.
It is only in Christ Jesus that we can boast.
In his name, we ask you to help our unbelief,
that we may love you, and walk in the way Jesus taught us.
Amen.

MONDAY 14 APRIL 2025 HOLY WEEK

Lord God,
Six days before his death, your son sat with Lazarus,
whom he had raised from the dead, and ate dinner with his friends.
Once again, your gospel tells us, Martha served and Mary
knelt at Jesus’ feet to anoint them with costly perfume.
The disciple who was about to betray him said that it was a waste.
He didn’t really care about the poor – he just wanted to fill his own pockets
And make Mary feel ashamed.
Lord God, often we cannot discern what is best:
When to pour out costly perfume for your sake,
even if the world thinks it a waste.
When to be busy serving, or when to rest at your son’s feet and learn.
Give us ears to hear you and eyes to see.
For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Lord God,
I give you thanks, for you are good, and your mercy is endless.
Here I stand, at the start of this holy week,
This week in which your church remembers Jesus’ passion and death,
and I am distracted by many things.
Turn my eyes now to the one who comes in your name,
the one who opens the gates of righteousness,
the one who answers when we call.
I bless you, Lord, for shining your light upon me,
and for sending your son to us, in human frailty,
to walk the road we walk.
Open my eyes that I may see him coming,
may praise him with a pure heart,
may walk in the way of his suffering,
and share also in his resurrection.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

SATURDAY 12 APRIL 2025

A big thank you to Chris Hoskins and the fundraising team for organising the Spring Fayre on 12 April 2025 – and to everyone who gave of their time and talents in supporting this event. It was good to see folk from all three churches involved. A wonderful €1640.00 was raised for ACP funds and, just as important, were the conversations shared and friendships made.

THURSDAY 10 APRIL 2025
Today I had my first ‘official’ engagement as Archdeacon in Cyprus, when I met with all the clergy on the Island at Saint Barnabas, Limassol to bid farewell to the Dean of Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Nicosia, Jeremy Crocker. We also shared lunch afterwards at a local Indian Restaurant and then Bishop Sean and I caught up for a chat.  Purely business, of course!

SATURDAY 5 APRIL 2025
Thoroughly enjoyed my time today at the Veteran’s Bar, Coral Bay, Cyprus sharing my life story (my three careers and my journey to becoming a priest and ending up in Cyprus) with members of the Veteran’s Alliance (Public Services such as ex-Forces and Blue Light. I qualify as an ex-screw!). A really attentive crowd with some great questions and interesting conversation.

I was preceded by two ex North West bobbies who shared their stories of working in the Police. We had similar experiences of an acute lack of support when experiencing significant workplace trauma.

You don’t have to be ex forces or blue light to attend the Vets Bar. There’s always something happening during the week. Tony and the staff (and customers) are friendly and welcoming – I’ve enjoyed making friends with the lads and lasses there! And the breakfast is great. Highly recommended.

THURSDAY 3 APRIL 2025
Such a privilege to lead this service today for the family of the late Dawn Georgiou at Ayia Kyriaki (Dawn was a member there) and to lead an improvised Greek Orthodox Burial at Tsada Cemetery afterwards – when the Orthodox Priest was unable to attend at the very last minute. This was a first for me – even after 28 years in ministry. Some really nice elements to the committal.

Dawn had a text in her purse (so it must have meant a lot to her) which was read out during the service. I think it was a great commendation to everyone present as to how to continue living their lives without Dawn being around.

I charge you with the responsibility to keep alive; to grow, to change, to maintain the capacity for wonder, for spontaneity, for humour, to remain pliable, warm and sensitive. I charge you to give fully, to show your real feelings and to save time for each other, no matter what demands are made on your day. I charge you to see the meaning of life through the changing prism of love; to nurture each to fullness and wholeness and in learning to love each other more deeply, to learn to love the creation in which the mystery of your love has happened.

TUESDAY 1 APRIL 2025 CYPRUS NATIONAL DAY
Cyprus National Day (or EOKA Day) takes place on April 1. Unlike Cyprus Independence Day, their National Day commemorates the effort and struggle that the island endured in a fight for freedom. On 1 April 1955, EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston – National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) organization was established. Their purpose was to fight and gain Cyprus independence from British rule and unite Cyprus with Greece.

In 1958, Archbishop Makarios III who was exiled to Seychelles, agreed to proceed with the independence of Cyprus. On 19 February 1959, the London and Zurich Agreements for the Republic of Cyprus ended with an arrangement between Turkey, Greece, United Kingdom and Cyprus. Cyprus was proclaimed an independent country on the 16 August 1960.

Today, Cyprus National Day is a Bank Holiday and is meant to be a relaxing and enjoyable day. It serves as a symbol of reward and retreat for all citizens, reminding them of their country’s hard-won freedom. Me thinks it’s a day for Brits to keep a low profile!

TUESDAY 25 MARCH 2025 GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY
Today the Greek-Cypriot community in Cyprus commemorate Greek Independence Day marks a pivotal moment in Greece’s history. It marks start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 against the Ottoman Empire. The revolution was declared at the Agia Lavra Monastery near Kalavryta, when Metropolitan Germanos of Patras raised a banner symbolizing the official start of the uprising. This is where the slogan “Freedom or Death” was first proclaimed.

The struggle lasted eight years, involving over 100,000 fighters. The war captured international attention, inspiring philhellenes across Europe and America. Writers, artists, and intellectuals like Lord Byron championed the Greek cause, drawing attention to their plight. The famous phrase “Better one hour of free life than forty years of slavery and prison” became a powerful symbol of Greece’s fight for freedom. It was spoken by Rigas Feraios, a writer and revolutionary who played a key role in the national liberation movement.

In 1829, the Ottoman Empire recognized Greece’s independence, and in 1830, the London Protocol formally established Greece as a sovereign state.  The war concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832, establishing Greece as an independent state under the protection of Great Britain, France, and Russia.

The date also coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation, adding spiritual importance to the event. This dual significance strengthens the connection between faith and freedom. The Feast celebrates the angel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin Mary of Jesus Christ’s imminent birth. For many Greeks, the parallel between divine intervention and national liberation underscores the belief that their fight for freedom carried divine blessing. Today is a Bank Holiday and Greek-Cypriots will celebrate with parades, cultural events, and church services.

SUNDAY 23 MARCH 2023
37 years ago today I started working here. Seems just like yesterday when a naïve son of the north started life in the big smoke. For those of you who don’t know, this is HMP Wormwood Scrubs. The largest Prison in Europe at the time. I was transferred to HMP Liverpool in 1990 by which time ‘Walton Jail’ had become the largest Prison in Europe. Quite a learning curve I can tell you! Fond memories of friends and colleagues. Little did I know this would be the start of my journey to ordination. Nothing is wasted in Gods economy.

Many of us, and those we love, are in need of healing – whether that be physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual. Christians believe that God desires the well being of all people and it is because of this, and because we believe in a God who answers prayer, that we are holding a ‘Service of Healing and Wholeness’ at Saint Stephen’s, Tala.

We will pray for those in strained relationships, for those who are ill and bereaved and those who are struggling with the challenges of everyday life. There will also be an opportunity to be anointed with oil as we ask God’s healing on our body, soul and spirit. We give you a warm invitation to join with us. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a regular church attendee. It would be great to see you. If you can’t make it, do drop me a line with any prayer requests you may have.

Have you ever considered that Lent is a time of transformation rather than abstinence? And, whilst not one of us would ever lay claim to be able to change the world, each of us can change the world in which we live by doing something a little different this Lent by Fasting AND Feasting. For example:

Got to say we had a quite outstanding Meze at Ta Pinakia in Kennedy Square last night with our friends Rob and Janette (visiting from the UK). One of the tastiest meals we’ve had in a long time. I can highly recommend them.

MONDAY 3 MARCH 2025 GREEN MONDAY
Today, Monday 3 March 2025, is a Bank Holiday in #Cyprus and is the beginning of Lent that culminates in the Orthodox Easter Sunday. It is known as Green Monday (Kathers Deftera) or Clean Monday, Pure Monday, Ash Monday, or Monday of Lent – and marks the end of the Carnival season.

On #GreenMonday, Christians fast from midnight to noon apart from abstaining from wine, meat, eggs, and dairy products. Devout Christians also dedicate a significant part of the day to reading the Bible. Traditional food eaten includes olives, octopus, and shrimp.

A unique type of unleavened bread called ‘Lagana’ is prepared and baked only on Clean Monday. The bread is a reminder of God providing ‘Manna’ to the Children of Israel as he guided them through the desert to the Promised Land. But the most important event of all on Green Monday is kite flying – a traditional symbol of letting go and starting afresh.

SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2025

Give rest, O Christ, among the Saints to the souls of your servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no grieving, but life everlasting (Kontakion of Saturday of Souls).

Today is known as Saturday of the Souls (Psihosavato) – a day the Greek Orthodox Church pray for, and honour, those who’s souls have departed this earth. It’s actually the first of three Saturdays given over to this. Saturday is the traditional day of prayer for the dead, because it is the day Christ lay dead in the Tomb.

This is a prayer which is offered for the departed:

O God of spirits and of all flesh, You trampled upon death and abolished the power of the devil, giving life to Your world. Give rest to the souls of Your departed servants, emperors, patriarchs, bishops, priests, hieromonks, deacons, monks, nuns, and all pious Orthodox Christians who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection unto life everlasting, from all the ends of the world, fathers, forebears, grandparents, great-grandparents, parents, spouses, children, siblings, and all our relatives.

Give them rest in a place of light, in a place of green pasture, in a place of refreshment, from where pain, sorrow, and sighing have fled away. As good and benevolent God, forgive every sin they have committed in word, deed, or thought, for there is no one who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your word is truth.

For You are the resurrection, the life, and the repose of all the departed faithful Orthodox Christians, Christ our God, and to You we offer up glory, and to Your Father, who is without beginning, and Your all-holy, good and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages.

Amen.

There is a table set in front of the church called the memorial table where Koliva are placed. This is a dessert-like wheat dish with raisins, nuts, sugar, cinnamon, and pomegranate which all who are in attendance eat afterwards.

THURSDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2025 SMELLY THURSDAY
Today is Smelly Thursday when Cypriots in villages and towns fire up the grill and large amounts of meat are traditionally consumed. The name Tsiknopempti (Τσικνοπέμπτη) comes from the Greek words Tsikna (τσίκνα), which is the smell of grilled/burning meat, and Pempti (Πέμπτη ), which means Thursday. In the Greek Orthodox tradition, fasting on Wednesday and Friday is important, therefore Thursday is the best day for this – it was quite something to see families and streets coming together to celebrate around a BBQ with loud music playing! Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional Carnival celebrations in the run-up to Lent and is celebrated 11 days before Green Monday (or Ash Monday). Green Monday, 3 March 2025, has a tradition of its own – more about that nearer the time.

Smelly Thursday also sees the beginning of the Carnival Season. Details of local events can be found here

WEDNESDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2025
Good to share Holy Communion with the congregation at the parish church in the mining village where I grew up this morning – and where my dad’s ashes are interred in the graveyard.

TUESDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2025
Brrr! It’s pretty chilly at this city by the sea. But very happy to enjoy a coffee by a nice warm fire at ‘The Stack’ at Seaburn!

I’m back in my home town of Sunderland (via Manchester Airport and an overnight stay at Ben and Beth’s) and a drive up the motorway to spend a few days with my mam – she’s 91 yrs old and not in the best of health.

SUNDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2025

This is a copy of my talk given at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Stephen’s in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Sunday 16 February 2025. The Bible Reading was Luke 6:17-26.

SATURDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2025
Enjoying the latest album ‘Wayfarer’ by Dan Raza released on 14 Feb 2025. As Mark Ede suggests “If there’s a better ‘roots’ songwriter around I ain’t heard ’em.” It’s well worth listening to – https://www.youtube.com/playlist… but be sure to purchase the album if you like it!!

UPDATE 17 FEB. Just gotta say this really is an excellent album – not a dud track! I know it’s only February but surely this has to be in the running for the Americana Music Association UK album of the year for 2025.

SUNDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2025
A Sunday off! A bit chilly on the beach at Coral Bay, Paphos today – only 15’. Dylan doing what Dylan does!

FRIDAY 7 FEBRUARY 2025
A day of sightseeing around Larnaca and a visit to the Church of Saint Lazarus. Not many Christians know it, but according to ancient tradition, Lazarus of Bethany did not remain in his home near Jerusalem for very long after his being raised from the dead by Jesus. Instead, because the chief priests also sought to kill him (John 12:10), Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary soon fled to Cyprus where they began a small Christian community in Larnaca, then known as Kition. When Paul and Barnabas later visited Cyprus on their first missionary tour (Acts 13:4), they appointed Lazarus as the first Bishop of Kition. He continued to minister there for about thirty years before dying a second time.  His sarcophagus was rediscovered in 890 AD with an inscription on its side, “Lazarus, the four day dead and friend of Christ.” St. Lazarus Church was built over his burial site shortly thereafter, and the sarcophagus remains in the crypt to this very day.

We also visited the Mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke – the most significant Mosque in the whole of Cyprus. Hala Sultan Tekke was the second cousin of the prophet Mohammed and her body lies in a tomb here. We were privileged to be shown in the the room when the tomb is – but no photo’s allowed.

We also visited the 11th Century Panagia Angeloktisti Church in Kiti. A Byzantine church, whose name means “built by angels”.

And, of course, there had to be time for refreshments and food!

MONDAY 3 – THURSDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2025
Paula and I attended the Synod of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf at the Ledros Hotel in Larnaca this past week. It was a time of deep reflection, meaningful discussions, spiritual renewal and an opportunity to meet up with friends and colleagues as well as mission partners from across the globe! So much taking place – you can read all about it on the Diocesan Website here – see if you can spot Paula and I on the many photos taken.  Here are a few of my own …

SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2025
It was lovely to have our Friends mark and Debbie Derry, from Qatar, staying with us before journeying together to Diocesan Synod.  M and he preached at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Stephen’s in the morning.
Mark is the priest at the Church of the Epiphany in Qatar.

SUNDAY 26 JANUARY 2025
This sermon was preached at Saint Luke’s at 11.00 am in the Anglican Church of Paphos My title was The Spirit Of The Lord Is Upon Me and the Bible readings were Luke 4:14-21 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-31.

SATURDAY 25 JANUARY 2025
I’ve reached 350,000 hits on my website. Amazing! I blog about music, sport, faith and anything and everything! Why not have a browse over a cuppa and let me know what you think?

FRIDAY 24 JANUARY 2025
Really great for Paula and I to catch up with my mate Mark, and his wife Eunice, from Billericay (my previous parish) here in Paphos.

THURSDAY 23 JANUARY 2025
I led the funeral service for the late Barbara Tibbles at the Cemetery in Neo Chorio, near Latchi. It was my great privilege to commit Barbara into God’s loving care. I’m never ceased to be amazed how small the world is here in Paphos. Barbara’s family/son is from East Acton, West London, and lived around the corner from my digs when I worked at Wormwood Scrubs. We also found out over lunch that we both have a great love of Americana music.  He’s also a 62 baby too!

TUESDAY 21 JANUARY 2025
We enjoyed another ecumenical service of Evensong to mark the international Week of Christian Unity.

SUNDAY 19 JANUARY 2025
Today marks the first anniversary of my appointment at Chaplain/Priest to the Anglican Church of Paphos This sermon was preached at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am. My title was From Ordinary To Extraordinary and the Bible reading was John 2:1-11.

https://revpacman.com/2025/01/19/from-ordinary-to-extraordinary/

THURSDAY 16 JANUARY 2025
I led the funeral service for the late Eddie Hamer at the British Cemetery in Erimi – my first visit there. It was my great privilege to lead the service and to commit Eddie into God’s loving care. I must give a mention to Michael Clark who, as well as organising the service on Eddie’s behalf, gave a quite fabulous tribute which was warmly received by everyone present. It was good to meet Mark, Eddies son who lives in Burnley but works in Royton, Oldham, where Ben and Beth are living! And a lady who lived in Royton before moving to Paphos! It is indeed a very small world at times. It was also good to see some familiar faces and to make new friends afterwards over a John Smith’s at Eddie’s favourite pub the Mesogi Arms.

Hamer (Edward) Funeral Service

WEDNESDAY 15 JANUARY 2025
Today marks the first anniversary of my moving to Cyprus!  I remarked on my first post on this thread that in 12 months time I wouldn’t be wearing shorts and flip flops as I would no longer be a hardy brit, having experienced a hot Cyprus summer, but a soft ex-pat! I was wrong – I’m still in shorts and flip flops. It’s a glorious 18′ at the moment.

So … Dylan has the whole of Lemba beach to play on and decides he wants to roll about in smelly seaweed! Good job there was a fresh water stream leading into the sea so I could give him a wash there rather than waiting to get home!

SUNDAY 12 JANUARY 2025
This was preached at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s at 11.00 am in the Anglican Church of Paphos My title was I Will Be With You and the Bible reading was Isaiah 43:1-7.

https://revpacman.com/2025/01/12/i-will-be-with-you/

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 2025
Whilst it may be snowing and ice and freezing temperatures in the UK (can’t say I’m missing it) it’s a very pleasant 18’ down at the beach today at #CoralBay #Paphos #Cyprus with Dylan and me (Paula is in the UK)! Sorry if this post creates envy with my UK friends – I think it’s a bit of a wind up!

MONDAY 6 JANUARY 2025 EPIPHANY
The 6 January, Epiphany Day, also known as Theophany, is one of the most important Christian celebrations in Cyprus when they celebrate light, hope, and new beginnings. Happy Epiphany to all my friends who are celebrating today.

SUNDAY 5 JANUARY 2025 EPIPHANY SUNDAY
This was preached at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and 6.00 pm in the Anglican Church of Paphos on Epiphany, My title was The Journey Of The Magi and the Bible reading was Matthew 2:1-12.

https://revpacman.com/2025/01/05/the-journey-of-the-magi-2/?

SATURDAY 4 JANUARY 2025

This was much harder than I thought it would be. After my Top Twenty I gave up trying to put them in any kind of order! There are songs from every decade of my life but so many great songs and artists left out. I also limited myself to one song from each artist too! Hope you enjoy the listen!

SUNDAY 29 DECEMBER 2024
My last sermon of 2024! This was preached at the 8.15 am service at Ayia Kyriaki and a joint parish service at Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am.  My title is Four Resolutions For A New Year from Colossians 3:12-17 (one of the lectionary readings for the day).

FRIDAY 27 DECEMBER 2024
A very pleasant early morning walk on a sunny deserted Coral Bay beach (after a night of torrential rain and thunder and lightening) then a tasty brekkie at Second Cup Coffee Shop!

BOXING DAY 2024
A much brighter start to the morning so went for a walk along the coast at Geroskipou, Paphos (wearing Christmas / SAFC red!) and passed Saint Nicholas’ Chapel (where I perform wedding blessings and renewal of vows) which seemed a good place to be at Christmas!

We enjoyed a great afternoon at Neo’s Sports bar for a Hog Roast and live music from Davey Woodford.  Met John (and Michelle) an ex sergeant of 20 plus years in the RAF who invited me to join the Veteran’s Alliance in Paphos – I qualify on account on my time in the Prison Service.  I look forward to seeing what friendships may develop from that.

CHRISTMAS EVE / DAY 2024
Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki, Saint Luke’s and Saint Stephen’s on Jesus is the Light of the World from John 1:1-14. Numbers here in Paphos are quite low as many church members have returned home (UK, USA, Europe etc.) for Christmas. But a faithful remnant remains and we were b;essed to have many visitors worshipping with us!

https://revpacman.com/2024/12/24/jesus-is-the-light-of-the-world/

NB. This is an excerpt from an DM I received about my talk …

I attended your service on Sunday morning (Ayia Kyriaki). I have been in Cyprus for 17 years … My husband passed in March. I woke up 5:00 am this Xmas morning and just in my head said go to drive to Paphos to the service – I had never attended that church and it was a wish I had wanted to do. Strangely … my husbands fav Christmas song was the Coldplay one you mentioned … He was also a mad Star Wars fan … and had queued to see the film in the 70 in Leicester Square. So your sermon suddenly became very profound and emotional for me.

How amazing is that? God was certainly prompting this lady to get to church and there was no doubt this talk was meant especially for her.

CHRISTMAS DAY 2024
Torrential rain and thunderbolts and lightening – very very frightening! Not quite the weather we were expecting in Cyprus on Christmas Day! Though we enjoyed a fabulous 4 course Christmas Dinner with church members at Stephanie Restaurant in Tala – including a visit from Santa Claus!!

SUNDAY 22 DECEMBER 2024
Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s at 11.00 am on The Faith Of Mary from Luke 1:39-55. Numbers here in Paphos are quite low as many church members have returned home (UK, USA, Europe etc.) for Christmas. But a faithful remnant remains!

https://revpacman.com/2024/12/22/the-faith-of-mary/?

SATURDAY 21 DECEMBER 2024
A fabulous ‘open house’ this evening, unfortunately, we had torrential rain from about 3.00 pm onwards (so couldn’t gather outside around the fire pit) but that didn’t stop around 60 church members, friends and neighbours from dropping by for food and carol singing (even dancing too).  Lot’s of new friendships were made. Dylan was a star and is everyone’s favourite cuddly pooch! Paula and I were so busy being busy we didn’t have time to take any piccies. Agh!

Christmas at the Parish House 2024 vs2

FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER 2024
Attended the Carol Service at Petra Bible Fellowship, led by our friends Pastors Mike and Olga.  In the busyness of the Christmas season, it was a real treat just to sit in the congregation and enjoy the service.

Carols at Petra

TUESDAY 17 DECEMBER 2024
Met up for brunch with Pastor PC who is an American serving in the Middle East. Can’t say too much here – but he has an amazing story of God’s call on his life as a young man to be a missionary. Pastor P spent three summers (whilst at University) volunteering at All Souls, Langham Place, London.  P is currently having a break with his family in Cyprus and it was great to welcome his wife and children to Saint Stephen’s on Sunday. 2 selfies from 2 different phones!

SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER 2024
Two sermons today!

FRIDAY 13 DECEMBER 2024
A busy weekend ahead!

Carols in the Mall was a great success. Over 30 church members from across the parish formed the choir and lots of happy shoppers stopped to listen, join in and take piccies and videos. Carol Singing Mall

SUNDAY 8 DECEMBER 2024

FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER 2024 Saint Nicholas Day
Paula and I celebrate 38 years of wedded bliss on 6 / 12 / 24 (though we’ve been together since August 83!) – as Sandy Denny once sang ‘who knows where the time goes?’ We’ve experienced (and survived) our wedding vows when we committed our lives to each other ‘for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health’. We’re enjoying our latest adventure here in Cyprus – with many more to come.

THURSDAY 5 DECEMBER 2024
It’s the 5 of December. It’s 18’ and I’m wearing flip flops and shorts, the sky is clear and the flowers are blooming. Doesn’t feel like the Christmas season – I certainly won’t be singing ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ this year that’s for sure!

WEDNESDAY 4 DECEMBER 2024
I was very saddened to learn (via Facebook!) that a former churchwarden at Emmanuel Church Billericay Sheila Bailey has gone to be with the Lord. I wrote this in Sheila’s farewell ‘scrap book’ in October 2021 when she moved to the south coast to be near her son.

It is with a sad heart that I’m writing these words as you move onto pastures new. There’s no doubt all of us at Emmanuel, and in the wider community, owe you a great debt of gratitude for all the work you undertook before, during and after Emmanuel was built. Your vision, perseverance, hard work and long hours are greatly appreciated. You can be extremely proud of the legacy you will leave behind – a legacy that will be enjoyed for many generations to come.

It’s no secret we ‘agreed to differ’ on a number of issues in my early days. I was never intimidated by you – once a headmistress always a headmistress! (Once a Prison Officer always a Prison Officer!). However, good humour, respect for each other and wanting what was best for the church family, and the wider community, always won through. I look back to those days with fond memories which always raise a smile – as I know they do for you.

Ben and Annabel have grown up at Emmanuel and Paula and I have grown older! Ben married Beth at Emmanuel on 22 May 2021.

Many new members have joined us since 1992, some have moved away, and the Lord has called others home. You will have your own memories of all those you have loved and lost down the years. However, the Lord has been faithful to us as He has been faithful to you, too.

It was good to hear you say the other week how you know the Lord is watching over you every day. I pray you will know his continued peace and presence in your new home.

“May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you; may the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26.

https://youtu.be/M7xWGVL-TH8

Sheila’s choice of song at her last service was ‘At The Name Of Jesus’ verse 4 includes these words:

Bore it up triumphant
with its human light,
thro’ all ranks of creatures
to the central height,
to the throne of Godhead,
to the Father’s breast,
filled it with the glory
of that perfect rest.

May Sheila now know that perfect rest in the Father’s presence. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Sheila’s funeral takes place at Emmanuel on Tuesday 10 December at 12.00 noon followed by private burial at Saint Mary the Virgin, Little Burstead. Sorry I won’t be able to be present.

PS. I wonder who recognises Sheila’s silhouette on this banner in Emmanuel?

FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2024
Today it was a privilege to lead the funeral service for the late Victoria Oak at Ayia Kyriaki, followed by a burial at Anavargos Cemetery (a quite lovely setting), to commit Victoria into God’s loving care. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.  It was a pleasure to meet husband Paul, daughter Maria and family and friends too.

Oak (Victoria) Funeral ServiceTUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2024
Such a privilege to lead a service for the Christian affirmation of Marriage for Dr Phil and Carole Brown from Chelmsford UK to celebrate 38 years of marriage at Ayia Kyriaki Paphos. I first had a Zoom call with Phil and Carole earlier in the year and it was a joy to finally officiate at the service. Prayers of blessing for family and friends. Carole and Phil wrote:

It was amazing in every way. We got everything we have dreamed of. Thanks to the two church wardens who assisted, and of course Rev Paul. Firstly for agreeing our service, and also for being such a star yesterday, everyone loved him.

This service brought an end to a busy season of Weddings, Wedding Blessings and Renewal of Marriage Vows for 2024. There’s still plenty of time to book your service for 2025! More details on our website here https://www.yourcypruswedding.org/ (and I could be the officiant!).

MONDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2024 Armistice Day
I led an Act of Remembrance on this Armistice Day as Chaplain/Padre to the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion at Londos Perasma Restaurant – we met for a hearty English breakfast before hand. I was privileged to sit next to Harry Fenwick, a 101 year old D-Day veteran. What an amazing man he is, what a story he has to tell and what a life he’s lived.

SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2024 Remembrance Sunday
On Remembrance Sunday, many people around the world will observe two minutes silence. Have you ever wondered what goes through other people’s minds for those two minutes? For older people, there may be memories of wartime; for younger people, questions about why we continue this practice. However, it is, for all of us, an opportunity to pray quietly: for those who were bereaved through war; for those who still suffer because of war; for the present areas of trouble in the world; and for peace. Younger people might like to think about the sadness of war, boys and girls who have been made orphans by war and by thanking God for the peace we have today.

SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2024
Such a privilege to lead a joyful service for the renewal of wedding vows at Saint Nicholas, Paphos for Sabine and Marc, who live in Ayia Napa, to celebrate 20 years of marriage. They really were such a lovely couple and great to meet daughter Camile and family and friends. Prayers of blessing for everyone. Sabine and Marc wrote:

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the genuine, cheerful, intimate ceremony you led for the renewal of our wedding vows. Every word of the service resonated with our faith and conviction. Thank you for adding to the beauty of the day!

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2024
Today, Christians and churches across the world are marking All Souls’ Day. Also known as the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, it is a day we remember those who have died. Whether someone you knew has died recently or long ago, lighting a candle can often help us pause, pray and think of them for a few moments. Many churches will be holding All Souls’ Day services, but if you can’t get to a church just now, why not light a candle at home? You can also light a candle online on The Church of England website at buff.ly/3U9n5j7

We had torrential rain, hail and high winds early yesterday evening (some are saying the worst storms in living memory) resulting in widespread flooding in the Paphos region with trees uprooting and landslides taking place. There is sure to be a lot of businesses and residential properties affected. We were without electric for several hours – just came on at 2.00 am. Dylan and I are safe – Paula is in the UK. THURSDAY 3 OCTOBER 2024
Dylan – our nearly 3 yr old Australian Labradoodle. Brought him with us from the UK. Not many like him here – he’s a bit of a celebrity at times (many folk take a photo of him) and a great conversation starter.

MONDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2024
We were delighted to welcome Sean Semple Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf to the Anglican Church of Paphos this weekend. We had a busy schedule and enjoyed great fellowship, food and friendship! Bishop Sean met with members of church council along with those licensed and authorised to minister (admittedly, Bishop Sean was given a bit of a ‘grilling’ (but he’s South African and likes a Braai!) Bishop Sean also visited Agios Neophytos Monastery enjoyed an informal supper evening and enjoyed a tour of the parish.

Bishop Sean preached and presided at Harvest Services at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos and a joint service with Saint Luke’s, Polis at Saint Stephen’s, Tala followed by a church family lunch at the Kamares club. This weekend was an opportunity for Bishop Sean to listen to the concerns, joys and sorrows of the parish and an opportunity for him share his heart and his vision for the mission and ministry of the Diocese which was very well received. You can read Bishop Sean’s Harvest talk here https://revpacman.com/2024/09/29/harvest-sunday-2024/

Kris Kristofferson, singer-songwriter and actor, has died at the age of 88 yrs. KK was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford but followed a military career and became a Captain in the 8th Infantry Division as well as being a helicopter pilot and a Ranger. KK turned down a teaching post at West Point Military Academy to follow his ambition to be a country singer. Many millions of us are pleased he followed his heart! RIP KK.

WEDNESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2024
Great to catch up with Karen, an ex-colleague of mine from the Basildon Deanery in Chelmsford Diocese, along with hubby Peter and friends Gerry and Anne. They attended Saint Stephen’s on Sunday (when I was at Saint Luke’s) but they came to the 9.00 am Eucharist at Ayia Kyriaki.  Great to hear all about Karen’s new ministry. Praying Gods blessing on them all.

J.D. Souther (John David) may be an unknown artist to many (I have several of his albums) but his catalogue includes classic songs he wrote or co-wrote for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor alongside his own solo projects. He is a member of the songwriters Hall of Fame.

Souther was also an actor and appeared in the TV series ‘Nashville’ adding some much needed gravitas as well as contributing his songs. He died on Tuesday aged 78 yrs of age. RIP JD.

Here are 12 of his best songs according to Rolling Stone Magazine. Be sure to check out ‘You’re only lonely’. #JDSouther

How you make others feelTUESDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2024
Many people will have their own Steve Legg story about how he impacted on their Christian life. I have a few … camping next to him and his family on holiday at Spring Harvest, Le Pas Opton one summer. Steve coming to Billericay to help celebrate Emmanuel’s 21st anniversary with a show for our young families. The excellent Sorted magazine and the bulk issues we bought to give away on Fathers Day.

But I will mostly remember sharing a room with him several years ago when he was a member of an Operation Christmas Child shoebox delivery team to Belarus when I was the team Pastor. I knew Steve was funny and a great magician but I saw a compassionate and sensitive side of his personality which was totally unexpected. We laughed together and wept together and shared Jesus with children and young people together. This is a picture of the Belarus Team and one of Steve ‘doing his magic!’

Steve’s legacy is immense and Carl Beech gives a wonderful summary of his life and ministry in Premier Christianity Magazine here. Prayers for his family and friends. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

I took part in a meeting of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf Synod on Zoom. Which was rather interesting! I was asked by Bishop Sean to lead the opening worship. This is what I put together! The last prayer is something I use at church council and adopted for Synod.

MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2024
Such a privilege to baptise Ariella from Cardiff at Ayia Kyriaki Church in Kato Paphos – at just over two years of age. Kristina is from Cyprus and Craig from the UK. It was a joy to welcome Ariella (the female version of the Hebrew name Arie and means ‘Lioness of God’) into the family of the Church and to encourage her parents and godparents to set the example in bringing her up in the Christian faith.

SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 2024
We attended ‘Songs of Praise in the Park’ organised by Saint Luke’s at Ayios Andronikos Park, Polis. The theme was ‘Faith Can Move Mountains’ and many of the well known hymns, readings and Bible readings echoed this theme.

WEDNESDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2024
Such a privilege to lead a joyful and moving renewal of wedding vows service at Saint Nicholas, Paphos for Deborah and Phillip from Surrey to celebrate 25 years of marriage and 29 years together. They really were such a lovely couple and we spent so much time laughing together. It’s always nice to receive feedback:

It was such a lovely experience and we could not have found anyone better to make our vow renewal so special. Please pass on our thank you’s to lovely Chris (wedding verger) and Amanda (wedding coordinator). What special people you are! We are blessed to have met you and we will definitely see you again xxx.

TUESDAY 10 SEPTEMBER 2024
This evening I sat on the first meeting of the ‘Diocesan Constitutional Review Committee’.  I was elected by the House of Clergy at Diocesan Synod back in February (my colleagues seemed to think my previous experience as Team Rector would put me in good stead!). It seems a daunting task but a necessary given the diversity across the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. As Bishop Sean commented in his inaugural address in June:

Our Diocese will be 50 years old in 2026. There is little doubt that it will need some re-patching and perhaps re-pitching if it is to be fit-for-purpose for the next 50 years. Such renewal and reform are being underpinned by the Constitutional Review Committee initiated by Synod. Constitutional review might sound dull, but it is how the wind of the Holy Spirit will blow the cobwebs away, and shape and enable our diocese to best continue the mission of Christ. I ask for your prayers for this process, and also for that most understated of spiritual fruit – patience.

We will probably be meeting on a monthly basis, so, if you’re the praying kind, please say a prayer for wisdom and clarity of thinking as I seek to be an active participant in this most prestigious group of ordained and lay colleagues.

I shall be taking a break from this page for a couple of weeks as I shall be in the UK having a break to visit family and friends. I’ll be flying into Manchester, then going across to the North West to the Wirral, then up to the North East to Sunderland, then down to the South East and Essex and then back to Manchester.  Who knows, I may see bump into you on my travels! NB. I have to say I enjoyed the overcast skies and drizzle in good ol’ blighty when I was there!

THURSDAY 22 AUGUST 2024
Great to meet up for a coffee with CMS missionaries Nabil and Sarah (who attended Saint Stephen’s on Sunday) and to talk about building Gods kingdom in Paphos and Lebanon. Nabil oversees Alpha International in the Middle East and it was such an encouragement to hear their story. We even found out we have mutual friends from Saint Mary’s Upton, Wirral going back nearly 30 years. The CofE really is a very small world.

WEDNESDAY 21 AUGUST 2024
We went to the cafe at Agios Neophytos Monastery and had a look around – for the first time!  Cafe was quaint and cool under the trees!  The Monastery founded by the Cypriot recluse and writer Neophytos in the second half of the 12th century. The hermit carved a cave out of the mountains called the ‘Enkleistra’, which is covered with some of the finest examples of Byzantine frescoes that date back from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The monastery has a noteworthy ecclesiastical museum and its later church also contains some of the finest Post-Byzantine icons dating to the 16th century.

MONDAY 19 AUGUST 2024
Such a privilege to baptise Alessandro De Moja from Wimbledon at Saint Nicholas’ Church in Kato Paphos – almost three years to the day since his parents, Giuseppe and Valentina, were married there. It was a joy to welcome Alessandro (a variant of the Greek ‘Alexander’ which means ‘Defender of Men’) into the family of the Church and to encourage his parents and godparents to set the example in bringing him up in the Christian faith. I prayed that Alessandro would be a ‘Defender of Men’ in whatever God has planned for his life!

FRIDAY 16 AUGUST 2024
On this day in 1977, newspaper headlines around the world announced the news ‘The King is Dead!’ Millions of fans worldwide mourned the death of Elvis Presley, who was just 42 yrs of age when he died of heart failure. Thousands of fans gathered around Graceland to pay tribute to while approximately 80,000 fans lined the streets of Memphis, to catch a view of the funeral procession. What is your favourite Elvis song? I’ve always thought that Elvis sang ‘Gospel’ better than anyone so I would choose his version of the hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’

Went for an English Brekkie at the Railway Tavern today down the road in Kissonerga – first time I’ve been there! Turns out the owner was brought up in Dagenham and lived in Hornchurch (both not too far from where I served in Chelmsford Diocese) a hammers fan and plays darts for Cyprus! They have a darts team! May even call by one Monday evening – though I may need to get practising!

THURSDAY 15 AUGUST 2024
On this day, 15 August, 1969, the Woodstock Festival took place at Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York. Approximately 400,000 fans trekked to the three-day event to see acts like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane, amongst many others.

WoodstockBilled as “Three Days of Peace & Music,” Woodstock would become a defining moment of the era, as well as an iconic milestone in pop culture history. Many amazing performances took place that weekend, this is my fave!

It was very special to be able to pray ‘surprise’ prayers of blessing for our friends Andy & Alison on their 25th Wedding Anniversary after our 9.00 am Communion Service at Ayia Kyriaki, Paphos this morning and to pray for Emily and Megan too. Richard the organist even played the Wedding March as they left the church! Many congratulations and may you have many more wonderful years together.

TUESDAY 30 JULY 2024
Such a joy to lead a very moving service for the renewal of wedding vows at Saint Nicholas, Paphos for Adele and Al from Sleaford, witnessed by their three lovely children (Cian, Christopher and Niamh) to celebrate 16 years of marriage. Such a special day and a special birthday for Adele too – not saying which one, though! Prayers of blessing for the whole family. NB. Al is from Oldham (where Ben & Beth are living) and Adele is from Hartlepool!  It’s a small world!

MONDAY 29 JULY 2024
One of the unexpected joys of ministering here in Paphos, is the number of visitors who attend services here. I really ‘hit it off’ with the Hoskins Family (Andy, Alison, Emily & Megan) from Cardiff and shared a coffee with them last week (Paula was working). However, this evening we have a lovely time together, with fantastic food at Yialos Taverna in Coral Bay.  We laughed all night! Sometimes you just make a real connection with people – this is one of those situations.

However, it really was appalling to see Christianity so openly mocked in the opening ceremony with the tasteless portrayal of the Last Supper. Utterly insensitive, unnecessary and offensive.

The 138th Durham Miners Gala takes place on Saturday 13 July 2024. It is one of the largest gatherings of Trade Unionists in the world and celebrates a sense of fellowship and community around the Colliery and its Brass Bands. This year marks 40 years since the great Miners’ Strike of 1984-85, with the theme of ‘Solidarity Forever!’

This is a reflection of my visit to 132nd Durham Miners Gala on Saturday 9 July 2016 which attracted a crowd upwards of 140,000 – including myself, Paula, Ben and Annabel.

Happy Independence Day. No, I don’t mean American Independence Day (though fireworks would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much) I mean MY Independence Day! Confused! Well, twenty six years ago on this day (1998) I was ordained Priest by the Bishop of Chester, at Chester Cathedral, which meant I was no longer a Deacon (I was ordained in June 1997) and was now deemed able to lead services of Holy Communion on my own. Which means today marks my coming of age as a Priest in the Church of England. My Independence Day! Soli Deo Gloria. I even have the paperwork to prove it!

Today was also a General Election in the UK which resulted in an unprecedented landslide victory for Labour.

TUESDAY 2 JULY

Such a joy to lead a Service of Prayer and Blessing at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos, on the Marriage of Amandeep and George from North London and to celebrate with family and friends from UK, Australia, Zimbabwe and Cyprus.

Glad to say that our immigration papers were submitted today (what a carry on this has been). Now awaiting a date for bio-metric tests!

SUNDAY 30 JUNE 2024
I preached at a joint service at Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am on ‘How Do We Become A Healthy Church’ from 1 Corinthians 12:12-30a.  With more than a little help from Bishop Sean!

FRIDAY 28 JUNE 2024
We visited Dragon Rock Kennel’s in Polemi, owned by our friends Charlie and Adrian. As you can see by the photo’s below, they were caught right in the middle of the wildfires a couple of weeks ago. Charlie and Adrian incorporated a 10 yard ‘fire break’ in their design and this feature saved the kennel’s and their house when many homes in the locality were lost. They seemed quite ‘matter of fact’ about surviving this experience, which I found quite amazing.

MONDAY 24 JUNE 2024
I had a very exciting Kataklysmos celebration at Sunset Beach, Kissonerga when I baptised Majd by full immersion. Majd is a Palestinian Christian, born in Jerusalem and now living in Canada.  It’s an amazing story of how we met and how he wanted to be baptised in a Bible land sea. After listening to his testimony, and talking through what this commitment meant, I became convinced that it was the right thing to do.  The waves were a bit rough but we managed to do this in front of his family and a few interested by-standers! Such a privilege to be involved in such a significant day in this young man’s life.

SUNDAY 23 JUNE 2024
Preaching at Saint Luke’s, Polis at 11.00 am on ‘The Storms of Life’ from Mark 4:35-41.

https://revpacman.com/2024/06/23/the-storms-of-life/

This weekend in Cyprus they are celebrating Kataklysmos which is the Greek Orthodox Pentecost Celebration. However, the word ‘kataklysmos’ (to ‘wash down’) is also known as the ‘festival of the flood’ and commemorates the flood of Noah and his ark and so many water based events will take place across the island.

FRIDAY 21 JUNE 2024
It was my great privilege to lead the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Faith of Geoff Sanford at Choletria Cemetery, where he was reunited with his wife Jean, and to commit him into the Lord’s loving care. Geoff was originally from Addlestone, Surrey and trained as an Engineer which took him to many locations around UK and the Middle East. Geoff’s talents were many, he designed the first edition of The Paphos Post (the editor, Judith Evans, sang a beautiful version of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ at the graveside) and acted as a consultant to the Friends’ Hospice Paphos. (Current President Chris Jones read out a tribute that Geoff had written!). Geoff was very proud of his son, James daughter-in-law Christina and grandchildren Anthony and Alexis. Geoff was a former church member in the parish and I was able to share Communion with him at his home a couple of weeks ago. His death was quite unexpected. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

A Prayer for Father’s Day:

Father God, thank you for all the dads, stepdads, uncles, grandads, mentors, foster dads, guardians, and father figures raising children with love. We ask that you strengthen and uphold each one, and grant them guidance and grace as they nurture the children in their care.

As we remember those who have made a difference in our lives, we also lift to you those for whom Father’s Day is difficult. We ask that you draw near to those who have broken or difficult relationships with a father figure, those who are missing father figures, waiting for father figures, or longing to be father figures. May they know your comfort and peace.

As your beloved children, we are called to reflect your heart. Help us to follow you, and to show your love, encouragement, and welcome to those around us. Amen.

Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at 11.00 am on ‘The Parables of the Seeds’ from Mark 4:26-34.

Really great to catch up with Mike, Jo & Jake, our friends from Billericay on holiday in Paphos, at the Sea You Beach Bar at Sunset Beach, Kissonerga, last night. Great view too!  I married Mike & Jo in June 2017 – can’t find a selfie though! I often take Dylan for a walk along this beach but first time we’ve eaten here! I was amazed to learn that Mike & Jo regularly read this diary page.  Hello Mike & Jo!

SATURDAY 15 JUNE 2024
Such a privilege to officiate at the Service of Blessing for the Marriage of Victoria and Nicholas from Dubai at Coral Beach Hotel this evening and to be part of their special day along with their family and friends. Interestingly, Victoria is a Palestinian Christian born in Jerusalem and Nicholas is Lebanese and they met in Dubai. This could only happen in Cyprus!

Such a joy to be in the congregation at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos for the marriage of our wedding coordinator, the stunning Amanda Clarke to George McCusker, the handsome man of her dreams! Wishing them both God’s richest blessing on their new life together. The service was led by my colleague Revd Andrew Burtt.

THURSDAY 13 JUNE 2024
Just me and Dylan on my Birthday! Paula is in UK for work and Taylor Swift! We enjoyed a 6.00 am walk along Sunset Beach when it’s nice and cool and no-one else is around.

WEDNESDAY 12 JUNE 2024
A welcome mist as I took Dylan for a walk at 6.00 am. However, it is 25’ already and humidity is 57%

TUESDAY 11 JUNE 2024
Wildfires taking hold in the hills around Paphos.  Villages affected include Drinia, Psathi, Polemi, Kurdaka, Pitargos, Faleia, Choulou, Lemona, Lapithiou, Agio Dimitriano. Threat is also a threat to Letibu, Amageti, State, Virgin Mary. Along with Houses the fire has affected Animals, Crops, Wild Vegetation, Trees etc.

Praying for the families caught up in the fire yesterday and for those that have lost their homes and possibly their livelihoods. Praying also that the fire doesn’t restart as temperatures rise to 41°. It is going to be a long hot summer- and probably a very risky and tiring one for the fire fighters and emergency services and volunteers. We’re safe but several church members have been affected

I watched The Pitmen Poets on a livestream from Keswick! Both Billy Mitchell and Bob Fox played a very well received sell out gig at Emmanuel Church Billericay in March 2023

And if you attended that evening you’d have loved this. I would have booked ‘The Pitmen Poets’ to perform in Billericay if I hadn’t moved to warmer climes! It was a quite fantastic concert – and well recommended.  It can be viewed on Folkscape Live

SATURDAY 8 JUNE 2024
Kissonerga beach – a cool place for Dylan at 7.00 am on another (soon to be) hot day. Next time I’m going for a swim – whether he comes in or not – it was a perfect temperature to do so!

FRIDAY 7 JUNE 2024
Phew! A real scorcher today. I need to get another thermometer and see how high it goes! Thankful for air con! NB. I know you measure temperature in the shade, but it gives you an idea how hot it is! Car temp is from yesterday!

THURSDAY 6 JUNE 2024
I led the funeral service for the late Pauline Wynn. An amazing coincidence is that the family are from Sunderland and some are from Silksworth – the mining village where I grew up (I moved away in ‘88). Some even know my mam – Sheila Carr! Another of those god-incidences I’ve experienced since I arrived in January. It was a pleasure to visit the family earlier in the week (I think the local connection made planning the funeral easier for them). It was my great privilege to lead the Thanksgiving Service for Pauline’s life in #Peyia and to commit her into God’s loving care.Wynn (Pauline) Funeral ServiceIt was great to meet so many Mackems afterwards. I think I’ve made some new friends and I can’t wait for the football season to start so I can watch SAFC games with some fellow black cat fans – though I’m sure I’ll be sharing a bevvy or two with them before then!

Today was the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and I was privileged to lead an Act of Remembrance at Mandria Beach – my first official engagement as Chaplain to the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion. Harry, a 101 yr old veteran of D-Day, was our guest of honour.

MONDAY 3 JUNE 2024
What an example, and encouragement the late Rob Burrow has been to so many of us as he lived with MND over the last four and a half years. He showed the world what living and loving looked like and this was always done with the biggest smile on his face.

Rob Burrows 3 June 2024

A Prayer for those mourning the loss of Rob Burrow (from Sue Wise)

May they be comforted and proud in what he meant to so many. For all those living with MND, coping with the decline in their physical condition as the disease progresses, and for those watching and caring for a loved one with the disease. May they be strengthened by the example left by Rob Burrow and others who have done the same, and live life as positively as possible while they can. Grant them rest and peace at the end. Lord have mercy. Amen.

FRIDAY 30 MAY 2024
Congratulations to Liz & Sam Davies from Bath on renewing their wedding vows after 10 years of marriage at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos. Really enjoyed meeting them and such a joy to be part of their special day along with their family and friends.

Watched Saints vs Sarries with my neighbour Mike.  Hoping for an away win but it wasn’t to be.  Too many handling errors and a better team in Saints on the day – and most of the season if I’m honest! A shame the Farrell and the Vunipola brothers don’t have another trophy to add to their tally as they head to France – but they’ve had a pretty successful career as members of ‘The Wolfpack!’ Here’s to the next generation.

Congratulations to Lesley-Anne Kirk and Don from Boldon near #Sunderland (my home town!) on renewing their wedding vows after 20 years of marriage at Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos. Such a lovely couple and such joy to be part of their special day.

FRIDAY 25 MAY 2024
Today is known as ‘Wesley Day’ and I posted this to my website!

https://revpacman.com/2024/05/24/john-charles-wesley/

Today was also the day Sean, my new Bishop, was enthroned in Bahrain (for churches in the Gulf) and he is being enthroned here in Cyprus on 22 June in Nicosia. I watched the service ‘live’ online and I was struck by these words from St Isaac of Nineveh read out in the service:

… be persecuted, but persecute not; be crucified, but crucify not; be wronged, but wrong not; be slandered, but slander not. Have clemency, not zeal, with respect to evil. Lay hold of goodness, not legality. The person who lives in love reaps the fruit of life from God, and while yet in this world, even now breathes the air of the resurrection.

THURSDAY 23 MAY 2024
I met with Lesley-Anne and Don from Boldon, Tyne & Wear (Lesley-Anne is from Sunderland) to talk through their Renewal of Vows service on Monday. We caught up afterwards for a coffee and to share our stories! Such a lovely couple (even though Don is a Mag!). Look out for the selfie on Monday!

This looks like a fun evening. Unfortunately I’ve left my gold lame suit in storage back in the UK but looking forward to being a ‘Super Trooper!’

ABBA

POST GIG! Well … not one of the best cover bands I’ve seen. Vocals were weak, mix was poor and volume only really reached about half of the outdoor arena – seating was allocated (chairs round tables) so we had no choice where to sit! However, we made some new friends on the table we were sharing which was fun and interesting. The Buffet at 14 Euros was excellent value and so were the drinks. Not the ‘rip off’ you might expect at events like this.

WEDNESDAY 22 MAY 2024
An interesting article in the Cyprus Mail about how life expectancy in Cyprus is higher than the EU average.

On the day the UK Prime Minister (Rishi Sunak) announced a General Election on 4 July 2024, I know who I would vote for to be the next PM.

Then straight down to Paphos for a ROV (Renewal of Vows). “Congratulations to Anna and Julian from Poland on renewing their wedding vows on their tenth anniversary at Saint Nicholas’ Chapel, Paphos.Anna & Julian ROV

Julian and Anna sent me an email with this picture taken by the photographer along with these lovely words (they are Polish, hence the ‘broken’ English):

You were one of the nicest person that we’ve ever met and the whole family was simply delighted in conjunction with the way in which you’ve ruled the ceremony, and really pleased with you as a person. I wish you all the best in the future, keep smiling, cause it really works for the people around. I hope that we will meet again, we are really grateful for all that you’ve done for us.

Four years ago today. A COVID funeral for my dad with only 10 family members allowed. Distress on distress. Those were difficult and challenging times for bereaved families during the pandemic. Not only did I lose a loved one during lockdown, I officiated at many funerals during that time too.

SUNDAY 5 MAY 2024

Cyprus EasterToday the Greek Orthodox Church celebrate Christ’s resurrection and this is the traditional greeting:

Christos Anesti
Χριστός Ανέστη
Christ is Risen.

Alithos Anesti
Aληθώς ανέστη!
Truly, He is Risen.

Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and at 6.00 pm and Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am on ‘Peter & Cornelius’ from Acts 10. I’ll get my money’s worth out of this sermon this Sunday, that’s for sure!

SATURDAY 4 MAY 2024
At midnight I was one of 1000’s of worshippers both inside and outside of the Church of the Apostles Paul and Barnabas to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection in the Greek Orthodox Church calendar. Paula & I and Annabel & Dan went with our friends Nick & Keylia. These are some of the piccies …

It was quite an amazing experience to be part of. Especially to see whole families coming together to mark this occasion. The tradition is that everyone carries a candle and at midnight the priests begins a chain of light that engulfs the whole church square. There is a traditional hymn sung at this time Christos Anesti and is sung for 40 days after Easter.

Christos anesti ek nekron
Χριστὸς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν
Christ is risen from the dead

 Thanato Thanaton patiras
θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας
and by His death

 Kai tis en tis mnimasi
καὶ τοῖς ἐν τοῖς μνήμασι
He has trampled down death.

 Zoin charisamenos
ζωὴν χαρισάμενος
and to those in the tomb he gave eternal life.

Afterwards, we were invited back to Keylia’s parents’ for a ‘break fast’ meal of Mayiritsa an Easter soup – which is traditionally eaten only once a year to break the fasting of Lent – along with cheese bread. Delicious. It was an unforgettable evening which resulted in a 3.00 pm bed time!

THURSDAY 2 MAY 2024
Congratulations to Lorna and Jason Dumbill from Warrington, UK, on renewing their wedding vows on their tenth anniversary at the Louis Ledra Beach Hotel in Paphos.  The first of many renewal of vows and weddings to come. So, anyone tempted to have a wedding or a renewal of vows on the beach with sand between your toes and the waves lapping up on the shore?

WEDNESDAY 1 MAY 2024
Today is a May Day Bank Holiday but because of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday many businesses are closed until Wednesday 8 May.  And that includes ‘Love Island!’ How will we cope without them? Feel withdrawal symptoms coming on already.

Love Island Easter

MONDAY 29 APRIL 2024
All eight of us went to Paphos Harbour and a trip on a glass bottomed boat to a ship wreck and a coral reef. I hate sailing and was nauseous most of the time. Not my scene man!

In the evening we went to an Elvis Tribute (Chris King) at the Sapphire Bar & Diner and it was quite fabulous – as you can see by the pictures – with a clever use of live videos too. Ben and Beth were in the wrong/prime position and so they were quite involved in the performance which was great fun – they thought I’d set them up, but I didn’t. Honestly! ‘Elvis’ knew I was a Reverend (probably from my booking) and he dedicated ‘How Great Thou Art’ to me (I think Elvis sang Gospel better than anyone) and it was quite moving to hear everyone singing along in the chorus. This hymn was also the first song sung at my induction service on Saturday, which made it even more special. Carol the manager has a great team and I can highly recommend a visit!

SUNDAY 28 APRIL 2024
Preaching at Saint Luke’s with the sermon title ‘I Am The True Vine’ from John 15:1-8.

https://revpacman.com/2024/04/28/i-am-the-true-vine/

Today is Palm Sunday in the Greek Orthodox Church which marks the beginning of Holy Week. Easter weekend is a Bank Holiday and along with a May Day Bank Holiday many businesses will enjoy a long break. Hope we don’t runout of supplies in the meantime!

SATURDAY 27 APRIL 2024
My Induction Service with the Archdeacon of Cyprus, took place at Saint Stephen’s, Tala on Saturday 27 April at 2.00 pm. With over 100 in attendance it was a wonderful occasion for myself, my family, the parish and the many guests from Paphos churches, the Royal British Legion and Rotary. Archdeacon Christopher gave a very helpful talk on embracing changes in the parish! I want to say a special thank you to Chris and Jacquie who put in a great deal of effort to make the service run smoothly. It was especially lovely that so many came back to the Parish House (18 Georgiou Christoforou, House 4, 8250, Empa) for Afternoon Tea. Thank you to Paula, and the family, for all their hard work. It was a very special day. Here are some piccies to mark the occasion.

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 2024
Ben and Beth, Annabel and Dan and Peter and Rachel (family) have all arrived safely on the island for my Induction Service on Saturday.  Dylan is past himself and doesn’t know who to go to first. We booked an Air B&B a couple of doors down which is more than a little convenient. If any of you are interested in coming over from the UK to spend a few days with us in a larger group – this is perfect.  We are well situated for beaches the harbour etc., but you’d probably need to hire a car. We hired one for the family, fully insured from Hertz for 25 Euros a day!!

And now that Ben is here the most important piece of unpacking is now in place.

Really pleased to see that a memorial plaque has been put on the bench near to #Billericay War Memorial in memory of Len Hale. It is a fitting tribute to a true gent. Rest well Len – you are fondly remembered in the hearts and minds of your friends in the RBL, churches and across the town.

SATURDAY 20 APRIL 2024
I performed my first Baptism here in Cyprus today for Arianna Geraldine Fletcher. Peter (the dad) is from Middlesbrough and we’ve enjoyed some great banter over the last few weeks. It was a joy to spend time afterwards with Joanna (mum) and godparents and friends over some refreshments and to make some new friends along the way.

FRIDAY 19 APRIL
Found another coffee shop called OKNO about 15 mins walk away that is also a venue for darts and pool! Looks like I could be spending sometime there when we have visitors. Spent a long time talking to the owner about God and faith.  This was only possible because she made such a fuss of Dylan.  He’s still attracting attention wherever we go.  Talking about Dylan, by law, we have to put up a ‘beware of the dog’ notice on the gate.  Most of the official notices have pictures of Alsatians, so I thought I’d make my own. Would you really by afraid of this dog?
Beware of the dogTHURSDAY 18 APRIL
Attended a committee meeting of the Paphos branch of the Royal British Legion (I was appo9nted Chaplain earlier in the year). Today was also a solemn day as it is the fourth anniversary of my dad’s death at 89 years of age.

TUESDAY 16 APRIL 2024
Went to Limassol to try and sort out my immigration status. Seems we have been wrongly advised and have now had to send documents back to the FDCO to be legalised which is rather frustrating as these could have been done when we were still living in the UK. AGH!

Still unpacking but most of it is done – now need to give some thought to my study!  Too much stuff and too little space!

Missing Gail’s in Billericay High Street for coffee and cinnamon rolls – and the staff of course! However, Cinnabon is equally delicious over here!

SATURDAY 13 APRIL 2024
Enjoyed a great evening with Rhys Taylor at ‘Love Island Cakes’ in Kissongera  Mostly covers but Rhys has a great voice and is a mean guitar player.  Highlight, for me, was a cover of Chris Stapleton’s Tennessee Whiskey. However, I think folk need to be educated about what a ‘listening gig’ means! Such a fab venue and some great nibbles to be had too!

TUESDAY 9 APRIL TO FRIDAY 12 APRIL 2024
We’re still unpacking! Found an amazing garden centre nearby  X-Rays and blood tests for immigration (both taken in an hour and immediate X-ray results – amazing!) and as well visiting our agent.  Zoom prayers, Holy Communion, a church council meeting, Baptism visit, parish notices, sermon prep and admin. And still unpacking – this will take an age. One of the quirky things about houses over here is that they have the windowsills on the outside rather than inside. So where do you put your ornaments? Quite an issue for us – so a good number may have to go in a box in the shed, along with the additional pictures we have no space for.  This is the current state of my study!

MONDAY 8 APRIL 2024
Found our local coffee shop ‘Love Island Cakes’ in Kissongera, about 1 km away. Food and staff brilliant. We got tickets for a gig on Saturday evening. Seems just like the perfect intimate event for us after hosting monthly house gigs for 30-35 people for over 15 years in Billericay. Anyone fancy joining us?

Those of a certain vintage will remember this name. However, I can guarantee that the furniture is a much better quality than that being sold by Albert and Harold! Will it be delivered by horse & cart or van?  Watch this space!

No church today as I had Sunday off as I was moving house and unpacking. We went to Polemi in the mountains for the annual Tulip festival – not Tulips as we would know them. Apparently they go back to Alexander the Great and Polemi is the only place in Cyprus where they grow! We enjoyed some traditional Cypriot in the town square before everyone walked to the Tulip fields together.

I donated my vintage Yamaha RD350 YPVS to the Christian Motorcyclists Association before moving to Cyprus. An original 1990 H Reg which I’d had for over 30 years. Sorry to see it go but pleased it’s been put to good use. Apparently it created a lot of interest. Really great to see a Holy Bible on the seat!

SATURDAY 6 APRIL 2024
Enjoyed a Coffee Morning at PAWS dog shelter and making new friends. In the afternoon we enjoyed a super lunch with Robert and Julia. And later in the day it was really great to catch up, quite unexpectedly, with Paul and Ruth (friends from Calvary Fellowship, Sunderland) today at Paphos Harbour and Ayia Kyriaki (Saint Paul’s Pillar). It’s been a while but so good to catch up with each others news.

FRIDAY 5 APRIL 2024
Went for a walk with Dylan around Empa – such a quaint place. Bumped into Harold and Betty, a retired miner who hails from Easington Lane – it’s such a small world.

THURSDAY 4 APRIL 2024
Wahey! Finally moved into Parish House in Empa from temporary accommodation in Tremithousa. Two loaded vans and reunited with worldly goods that were packed and shipped in December. These chaps from Peter Morton Removals were quite brilliant all day. As have all the staff in UK and Cyprus especially managing customs for us. I can thoroughly recommend them. Thanks guys.

MAUNDY THURSDAY 28 MARCH 2024

PALM SUNDAY 24 MARCH 2024
Not the best of weeks since we’ve been here. Paula has been in bed with a nasty virus that has been going round and I’ve been in bed since Friday afternoon (and I’m rarely ill). Poor Dylan – he can’t nurse both of us. I can’t believe this meant I wasn’t able to attend the Palm Sunday services.

MONDAY 18 MARCH 2024
Today is a Bank Holiday in Cyprus and is the beginning of Lent that culminates in the Orthodox Easter Sunday. It is known as Green Monday – or “Clean Monday, Pure Monday, Ash Monday, or Monday of Lent” – and marks the end of the Carnival season (which we attended on Saturday afternoon).

green-monday-free-vectorOn Green Monday, Christians fast from midnight to noon apart from abstaining from wine, meat, eggs, and dairy products.

But the most important event of all on Green Monday (so I understand) is kite flying, either on the beach or at a park.

WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2024
Heard today that we’ll be able to move into the parish house in Empa on 4 April – which is very welcome news indeed.  This means Paula and I (and Dylan) will be settled into our new home well before my induction service on 24 April 2024. It might also be a few degrees warmer too as we move closer to the sea! Great to have Ben and Beth on the Island for a long weekend. TUESDAY 12 MARCH 2024

A beautiful blue sky in Tremithousa at 7.30 am today when taking Dylan for a walk. Such a great start to the day and trying to get into the habit of early morning walks before the weather gets too hot.

7.30 am 12 march 2024

We had a very moving session at our Lent Course this morning looking at ‘Mary: Grieving Mother’. I think Mary is one of history’s most misunderstood women. She’s been misunderstood by those who claim she was a perpetual, sinless virgin and by those who see her, rather than Jesus, as the mediator between God and men. We spoke about how, in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Mary is Theotokos (Mother of God) which emphasises the divine nature of Jesus rather than suggesting divine status for Mary. Caroline sent through this moving video which also has great lyrics which links to the above theme..

MONDAY 11 MARCH 2024
The Day Of The Triffids in Tremithousa – if you know you know!

I was hiding from them even while I moved among them.

John Wyndham

They are not Fennel – though they look surprisingly similar! I’m told they are quite poisonous and grow up in no time at all.

Triffids

SUNDAY 10 MARCH 2024
Preached at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s on the theme of Mothering Sunday and how each of us, as belonging to a ‘mother church’ have a responsibility of caring for and nurturing each other.

SATURDAY 9 MARCH 2024
The ACP notices for the next week can be read here 03 ACP News 10 March 2024 A4

I’m off to the ‘Keg and Barrel’ near the harbour to watch England vs Ireland with Nick and Keylia. I’m told it’s an infamous Rugby pub, with great food, so looking to enjoy a fabulous atmosphere – though I’m sure England will get hammered.  I’m planning to wear my England shirt – I’ll let you know if I survive in one piece!

ENGvIRE

Well what do you know … they did the unthinkable and won! Totally unexpected. Great game. Best we’ve played for a long while. In fact, I think it was the best England performance since we beat the All Blacks in the World Cup Semi Final in 2019. OK, only one point, but a wins a win!

THURSDAY 7 MARCH 2024
So, Dylan had his first #Cyprus groom today at Kims K9 Klippers – who did a great job! Isn’t he handsome?

Today is Tsiknopempti (Smoky/Smelly/BBQ Thursday) when Cypriots in villages and towns fire up the grill and large amounts of meat are traditionally consumed. Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional Carnival celebrations in the run-up to Lent and is celebrated 11 days before Green Monday (or Ash Monday) which this year takes place on 18 March. Green Monday has a tradition of its own – more about that nearer the time.

Talking about consuming large amounts of meat, we enjoyed another fabulous ‘Greek Night’ meal, with live music, at The hunter – Cafe Bar this time with our friends Richard and Sarah from Billericay. Marios is a great cook and Eleanor a wonderful host! Richard and Sarah say we’ve found a little gem – and they are absolutely right! ‘Greek Night’ takes place every Thursday evening and is highly recommended.

WEDNESDAY 6 MARCH 2024
The Antiquities Dept have begun repairs on the roof of Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos – and gave us less than 48 hours notice! They must have started at dawn as these photographs were taken at 8.30 am. It will take around 2-3 months for the work to be completed.

TUESDAY 5 MARCH 2024
Enjoyed a stimulating Lent Course thinking about Judas.  Lot’s of perceptions changed as a result.  Great to share lunch with Amanda and Savvas afterwards.  Tuesday was a challenging day, as all was not well in Cyber Space! However … FB Blackout

MONDAY 4 MARCH 2024
Had a bit of a jaunt (6 hour round trip) to Kyrenia (on the northern tip of Turkish Cyprus) for a clergy chapter meeting where Fr Alec Mitchell, along with wife Linda, is the Chaplain at Saint Andrews.  We met at their amazing house ‘The Hermitage!’ A quite remarkable building which even boasts its own private chapel alongside some amazing grounds. It was great to share the journey with Paphos colleagues Andrew and William (I drove) and to share fellowship with friends and colleagues – many of whom I met at Diocesan Synod in February. Really great to meet up with Clive from Saint John’s, Deryneia – it works out we have mutual friends which go back to my days at Oak Hill.  The Church really is a small world.

SUNDAY 3 MARCH 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and the 6.00 pm service which begins again, after the winter break, on the First Sunday of every month. I spoke on Jesus clearing the temple.

https://revpacman.com/2024/03/03/jesus-clears-the-temple/

With no 11.00 am service today, Paula and I took the opportunity to attend Petra Bible Fellowship just around the corner from us, on the Mesogi Road, where Judith, a friend of ours, attends. We received a very warm welcome, enjoyed the worship and the preaching of Pastor Mike on ‘the power of Jesus in the life of the believer.’ We’re looking forward to catching up for a coffee with Mike and his wife Olga sometime soon.

Well … whilst we didn’t come away from PAWS Dog Shelter yesterday with another dog, Paula has now decided we’re sponsoring two dogs instead! Meet Timmy & Teddy – plus Dylan of course!

SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2024
We went to a coffee morning (and enjoyed a bacon buttie) today at PAWS Dog Shelter Paphos. Quite an amazing set up looking after 150 dogs. They have a ‘no kill’ policy so some dogs, if they can’t find a home, have been there for a number of years.  They have 3 full time staff but dozens of volunteers – each having the same dogs to look after on a weekly basis. But, as I said to Paula: “We arrived with one dog and we’ll leave with one’ which we did. One dog is enough!” Having said that, posted this yesterday!

https://revpacman.com/2024/03/01/just-a-dog/

Another poor result from Sunderland today – a 1-0 defeat away to Norwich. We are now 9 points from reloegation and 9 points from a play off place.  Which is it to be?

FRIDAY 1 MARCH 2024
The 1 March celebrates Saint David – the patron Saint of Wales. So, “Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus” to all my Welsh friends – don’t forget to wear your Daffodils and Leeks with pride!

https://revpacman.com/2024/03/01/saint-davids-day/

I’m pleased to announce that my induction into the parish, by the Archdeacon of Cyprus, is planned for Saturday 27 April 2024 at 2.00 pm – if you are interested in joining with me or travelling over from the UK!  The following weekend is Greek Orthodox Easter so you could stay for the week and take in the Easter celebrations. Unfortunately, our house will be full but there are several excellent hotels around!

I attended the World Day of Prayer service today, which was written by the women of Palestine – quite poignant given all that is taking place in Gaza and Israel at the moment. I was particularly moved by the following:

THURSDAY 29 FEBRUARY 2024
So, leap year day! Did anyone get proposed to by the woman if your life?  Do let me know if you did. We’re getting into the habit of going for a walk to the local Deli and/or Coffee Shop every day. Not quite Gail’s but coffee and cakes are delicious. I’m happy to say that I’ve lost some weight since I’ve been here – and that’s before the sauna weather arrives. We sit outside in the sun for breakfast at 7.30 am when it’s a cool 18′ – this is the life!

We went to the Hunters Bar, a local Taverna, for a traditional Cypriot meal – which was absolutely delicious. There was Cypriot music too and dancing, but no plate smashing! It’s one of the most authentic meals we’ve had here going back many years. We’ll be going again next week with Richard and Sarah.  Not a great video but it gives you a taste!

SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s at 11.00 am on what it means to follow Jesus. Always good to meet those who visiting on holiday!

https://revpacman.com/2024/02/25/i-have-decided-to-follow-jesus-2/

SATURDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2024
So, weather is getting warmer during the day, around 18/20′ but it feels cold in the shade, indoors and on an evening too.  Though I guess we’ll be pleased about that at the height of the summer.

Looks like the tenants will be moving out of the church house mid March and so we’ll be on the move from our temporary and accommodation take delivery of the rest of our worldly goods. It will be nice to put down some roots and turn a house into a home – it feels as though we’ve been living out of a suitcase since mid-November. And we have!

Another poor result for Sunderland (lost 1-2 at home to Swansea) looks like our playoff hopes will have to be deferred ’til next season!

Went to a quaint traditional pub nearby called ‘The Hunter Bar’ to watch Scotland vs England. It’s never good to see England lose but it was a very disappointing result. The coaching team are not up to international standard – we’ve been left wanting for several months now – and some players have had their day, too.

The Hunter Bar

THURSDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2024
Today I was interviewed by John Holdsworth for the Bible Lands magazine – watch this space! In the evening, Paula and I visited the Rotary Club of Paphos-Aphrodite and enjoyed a wonderful meal at Poppadums Indian Restaurant (thoroughly recommended) as well as making new friends. What an interesting bunch of people they were.  Carol, the secretary, is from Newcastle, but I didn’t hold that against her!

WEDNESDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2024
Met the Principal of the NOVA Primary School to talk about how I might be able to serve the school. as well as Nick and Keylia for a coffee at Cafe Nero in Paphos Old Town overlooking the harbour – what a view! I’ll remember to take a photo next time. Such a lovely couple with a great story to tell. They gave us some great shopping tips too!  Paula arrived from UK in the middle of our chat!

TUESDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2024
We begin our twice weekly Zoom Prayers on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 9.00 am. DM for log on details. Liturgy for Morning Prayer during Lent can be downloaded here ACP Morning Prayer – Lent A4
Zoom PrayersDon’t forget the Lent Course starts today at Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am. More details here:

With Paula being away I’ve binged on two series of Reacher and really enjoyed it. I read one of Lee Childs’ books and he’s just like I imagined him. It stars Alan Ritchson (a Christian BTW) as Major Jack Reacher, a former US Army Military Policeman or lives life as a drifter/hobo but finding trouble along the way. This is much more authentic than the Tom Cruise film. How can he play someone who is 6’5″ – even with booster heels in his shoes?

Reacher - Binged

MONDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2024
I’m delighted to announce I’ve been elected as Chaplain to the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion. How wonderful. I met with the committee soon after my arrival and offered my services! I look forward to a fruitful partnership.

Took Dylan for a walk by the harbour on Monday and was stopped by twelve families for a cuddle and to take a photo: 3 English, 3 Cypriot, 3 Polish, Estonian, Finnish and Spanish. He really is an attraction and it also shows how many nationalities holiday in Paphos.

SUNDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2024
Preached today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at 11.00 am on the Baptism of Jesus. Met a couple at Saint Stephen’s who are from Handforth in Cheshire, where I served my curacy. I’m realising week-by-week here what a small world we live in.

https://revpacman.com/2024/02/18/the-baptism-of-jesus/

SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2024
I attended a Zoom seminar with Archbishop Hosam and the clergy in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East (which includes Cyprus and the Gulf) with the theme ‘Christian ministry in the time of war!’ It was hugely informative given what is taking place in Israel, Yemen, Syria and Iraq at the moment. It was very sobering and heart breaking as we thought about how to be church in the context of whom we serve (we have differing priorities as a result), how we put our faith into action, how we offer pastoral care and how we stand for peace and justice and how we represent those who have no voice and those on the margins. I have great admiration for my colleagues, and church members, ministering in such difficult and trying circumstances and for many others across the province where Christianity is a minority faith. This session will also help inform my prayers for the region.

Another dismal showing by Sunderland as we lost away to Birmingham City.  Well done Tony Mowbray – he should never have been sacked.

FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2024
Went for a walk with Dylan and explored the quaint village of Tremithousa and stumbled upon Agios Georgios church.  A big church for a small village. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

This was posted in this week’s Church Times. Better late than never!

Happy Birthday to the Angel of the North; 26 years old today. Such a wonderful and unique structure that so many people continue to cherish and enjoy. So, the parish have released this video to encourage folk in the UK to consider a Christian wedding here in Paphos. What do you think?

WEDNESDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2024
Had a busy couple of days! Enjoyed my first parish ‘Beetle Drive’ on Shrove Tuesday with pancakes for dessert, of course! Great to meet more church members. On Ash Wednesday I spoke and led Communion at all three churches.  It’s is such a special day and the liturgy of penance is so moving. You can read my talk here:

https://revpacman.com/2024/02/14/ash-wednesday-2024/

MONDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2024
Took Paula and Annabel to the airport at the unearthly hour of 3.30 am!  Just as well I was up watching the Super Bowl. Great memories of attending Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix, Arizona in 2015. Ben supported the New English Patriots and me the Seattle Seahawks.

Richard and Alison, the visitors at AK yesterday, made contact and we had a catch-up and a prayer this morning. If you’re visiting Paphos, be sure to get in touch and we can share a coffee together.

SUNDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s, Polis at 11.00 am. A number of visitors at Ayia Kyriaki this AM – there always is! Great to see ‘Old Oak’ Richard Steven, and his wife Alison attending AK alongside a couple of ‘new winers’ from Chichester (read my sermon to see the significance of this).

SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2024
GF_X3vNWMAAagiiMONDAY 5 FEBRUARY – FRIDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2024

I attended the Synod of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf at the Golden Bay Hotel in Larnaca (what a fabulous venue – though synod was soooo busy I didn’t have time to make use if any of the facilities and only managed a 10 min walk along the beach!). The theme was ‘Our Missionary Calling’ and the keynote speaker was Revd Canon Dr Penial Rajkumar, director of Global Mission for USPG.

We don’t have a Bishop at the moment (though Revd Sean Semple was announced as the sixth Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf during the Synod) so the Archbishop of Jerusalem was chairing. I made my declarations and received my license from Archbishop Hosam at the opening Eucharist on Monday so  now my appointment is official and I have a contract for three years. A date for a formal induction in the parish is yet to be arranged. Synod was like a meeting of the UN with all countries from gulf represented including Iran and Yemen. It was stimulating, tiring, amazing and informative. I enjoyed meeting my new colleagues, making new friends (I’ve received invitations from across the Gulf) as well as getting to know Jayne, Sarah and Jacquie who who attended from Paphos. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

Whilst I was away, Annabel came over to stay with Paula and Dylan and I know they had exciting things planned! I’ll have next weekend with Annabel before she flies home with Paula on Monday who has some work to do both at ARU and the Rectory.

SUNDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at 11.00 am.

https://revpacman.com/2024/02/04/jesus-lord-of-all-creation/

Sunderland played a North East derby away to Middlesborough – another bore draw!

SATURDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2024
A few face-to-face meetings this week and finalising details for the 2024 Lent Course (This is a resource I’ve not used before so looking forward to it!) as well as sermon writing and future planning! We’ve found a dog-sitter who, after ‘interviewing’ Dylan, along with some other dogs, has agreed to ‘look after him’ when needed.  They have an amazing compound so Dylan will get plenty of exercise and meet other doggies too. Great to see that the Six nations has started and will be sure to watch the games. A 2 hour difference for sporting events is a bit of a problem at times as they start and finish so late!

Heard from musician Keith James (who played a couple of House Gigs in Billericay) and he’s hoping to come over in September and so revpacman promotions will be starting House Gigs in Paphos.  same format, only this time it will probably be outside – depending on the weather.  Very much looking forward to that. I’ll confirm the date ASAP just in case some of you want to book a hotel for the weekend and join with us.

THURSDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2024
Weather has been a mix of brilliant sunshine and miserable rain. However, we went for a walk along the coast on Thursday and stopped for a coffee and this was the view (and an ariel view of the harbour)! Made a few people jealous on my WhatsApp group and on social media. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge.

Think we’ve found the supermarket for us – Papantoniou! They have a huge selection and a great home wear dept too! We also found the very quaint ‘Tala Square’ with several bars and Taverna’s which, when opened, is sure to have a great vibe. Watch out for piccies. I put together my first notice sheet (format might be familiar so some of you) you can read it here.  01 ACP News 4 & 11 February 2024

WEDNESDAY 31 JANUARY 2024
Met Judith Evans, the editor of the Paphos Post, for a coffee on Wednesday (who, I found out is a Christian). We shared hopes and dreams for the future – watch this space. She also runs a shop selling vintage women’s clothing called Revival Fashion – Paula loved it. Have a feeling any ladies who come to visit will be taken to it.

MONDAY 29 JANUARY 2024
I had an appointment with customs today and hoping for a quick turn around on all our worldly goods – they’ve been on the ‘high seas’ since 15 December 2023 having packed earlier in the month!  There’s been a huge amount of admin for customs and immigration over the past three months – who voted for Brexit, eh? In the afternoon I had a meeting with the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion which seemed to go well. In the late afternoon we had torrential rain, with thunderbolts and lightening – very, very frightening! Wasn’t expecting that!

SUNDAY 28 JANUARY 2024
Preaching today at Saint Luke’s, Polis (a 60km round trip) and whilst there is a lot of driving, roads are great and we are 10km (15 mins) from Paphos Harbour and 8 km from the Kings Shopping Mall.

https://revpacman.com/2024/01/28/presentation-of-christ-in-the-temple/

On our way back, Paula asked what I would like for dinner and I replied: “A full English!” So, back to the harbour and a full English it was – and very reasonably priced, and very tasty, too! All car parks were full, but the perk of being the Anglican Chaplain is that I have a car parking space 5 mins walk away at Ayia Kyriaki!

SATURDAY 27 JANUARY 2024
It’s a been a busy old time since I arrived, dealing with customs, immigration, opening a bank account,  setting up the TV to receive BBC and Sky etc (who hasn’t been watching ‘The Traitors?’) and getting used to lovely winter sun, walks around the harbour and meeting new folk! I’ve made contact with a variety of groups including the local Royal British legion and the Paphos Rotary Club – that’s on top of church meetings and services.

Watch the lads vs Stoke! Great result. HawayThe Lads.

GE3S_kmXQAEmI1D

Folk seem particularly friendly and it’s amazing how many people Dylan has started a conversation with. Whilst weather is great during the day (I’m wearing shorts and a T most of the time and it’s only January) it does get less warm on an evening – though Paula is feeling this much more than me.

Finding a supermarket to suit is a challenge so still ‘shopping around’ to find one we like! However, we have found a ‘Marks & Sparks!” There’s also a 24 hr Bakery/Deli along the road which is very tasty – though not Gail’s and no Cinnamon Rolls!

Went to the local theatre ‘Stage One Theatre, Emba’ this evening to see ‘Tell me on a Sunday’. It was a  compact, quaint place, seating around 100-120.  Could revpacman promotions use this as a venue, I wonder? Need to make some enquiries!!

Tell me Sunday

FRIDAY 26 JANUARY 2024
Spent nearly two hours at the Hellenic Bank opening an account (I need to do this is order to comply with immigration and customs to quality for residency in order to be able to perform my duties as a registrar for Weddings). Invited out for a meal with Andrew and Monica.

WEDNESDAY 24 JANUARY 2024
Led my first midweek communion service at Ayia Kyriaki and then went to visit Peter at Saint Luke’s, Polis.

TUESDAY 23 JANUARY 2024
Went for a coffee to the Amphitheatre in Tala! Wrote an introductory article for the ‘Paphos Post’ (I’m not hanging around!). In the evening I took part in an Ecumenical Service for the week of Christian Unity – glad I wasn’t asked to preach! Met some visitors who were on holiday from Cambridge!
Ecumenical service 2024

Did I mention that we have our bins emptied twice a week?  No different coloured bins here or white and blue sacks! Billericay folk will be quite jealous.

SUNDAY 21 JANUARY 2024
8.15 am service at Ayia Kyriaki followed by a joint service of Saint Luke’s, Polis and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at Tala – all seemed to go well. Folk were very welcoming and encouraging.

ACP Logo Photos

We were given a huge amount of fresh oranges.  All we need now is a juicer! Invited out to lunch to Bryn and Christine’s.

https://revpacman.com/2024/01/21/five-principles-for-being-church/

SATURDAY 20 JANUARY 2024
Trying to find a supermarket for us – not as easy as it sounds.  Finding a supermarket to suit is a challenge so still ‘shopping around’ to find one we like! However, we have found a ‘Marks & Sparks!” We’re 8 km from the Kings Shopping Mall.

Putting finishing touches to my talk for tomorrow and this has been essential reading since I arrived.

Essential reading

FRIDAY 19 JANUARY
Wasted no time in driving down to Paphos Harbour for a walk and an ice cream. Dylan is a cause for conversation – you were right Donna. 21’ here! NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

THURSDAY 18 JANUARY 2024
After catching up on admin (and making a start on my talk for Sunday). Graham and Mary took me out to lunch. Paula arrived at 6.30 pm – three hours behind schedule due to ice and fog at Stansted. No such problems here!

Temperature January 2024

Dylan arrived at 11.30 pm after flying in to Larnaca from Gatwick. He seemed none the worse for wear – a BIG thank you to Annie’s Ark for arranging this and thank you to the Billericay & Little Burstead Team Churches whose parting gift financed Dylan’s flight and crate! NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

WEDNESDAY 17 JANUARY 2024
So I arrived on Monday evening, 15 January, and it took 15 mins from walking off the plane to get through customs and collect my luggage!  Amazing.  Tuesday was spent meeting the mayor in order to register for water (the Dimarchos has a lot of influence over here – every village has one) and attending the Electric Company’s offices to register too.

We are living in temporary accommodation in Tremithousa until the lease for the tenants in the Church House comes to an end in March.

WhatsApp Image 2024-01-29 at 08.15.08_24a186a2

I had a drive around in the afternoon to see ‘what road leads where’ and stumbled upon this! Loved the wedges! Also realised that most independent shops close on a Wednesday afternoon (and many on a Saturday and most on a Sunday). I’ve been out and about in shorts and t shirt – had a few interesting looks. I’m obviously a tourist! This year I’m a hardy Brit, next year I’ll be a soft ex-pat. Mark my words!
