A number of people have been asking for updates about our new life in Cyprus as I serve as Chaplain to the Anglican Church of Paphos and so, rather than emailing/DMing people individually, I’ve decided to create a diary page which I will add to on a regular basis – the most recent post will be at the top! I’ll try not to be boring (or envy inducing) but you may want to come and have a peek from time to time!

Needless to say, we are missing our family and friends in the UK. If you’re the praying kind, do say a prayer for Paula and I as we face the challenge (and adventure) of settling into a new ministry in a new country in a new culture and making new friends. Be sure to keep Ben & Beth and Annabel in your prayers too.

We have found an excellent award winning vegan cafe Meraki about 10 mins drive away which also has an upstairs co-working space which Paula is planning to make use of – at 50 euros a month (a real bargain). Food is fresh and tasty and we’ll be frequenting here quite regularly, I think!

Really enjoyed leading an Open Air service of Holy Communion for Ascension Day at the picnic site at Pykni Forest Peyia. This was a first for me!

I preached a shortened version of this …

Ascension Day: Living Between The Times

Then straight down to Paphos for a ROV (Renewal of Vows). “Congratulations to Anna and Julian from Poland on renewing their wedding vows on their tenth anniversary at Saint Nicholas’ Chapel, Paphos.Anna & Julian ROV

Julian and Anna sent me an email with this picture taken by the photographer along with these lovely words (they are Polish, hence the ‘broken’ English):

You were one of the nicest person that we’ve ever met and the whole family was simply delighted in conjunction with the way in which you’ve ruled the ceremony, and really pleased with you as a person. I wish you all the best in the future, keep smiling, cause it really works for the people around. I hope that we will meet again, we are really grateful for all that you’ve done for us.

What can I say except that’s it’s such a privilege to be involved in such a special day for couples and families and comments like this make it all worth while.

Begin the Alpha Course at the Parish House taking us through to the end of June.  Do say a prayer for those who will be attending. Our topic today was ‘Is There More To Life Than This?’

TUESDAY 7 MAY 2024
Four years ago today. A COVID funeral for my dad with only 10 family members allowed. Distress on distress. Those were difficult and challenging times for bereaved families during the pandemic. Not only did I lose a loved one during lockdown, I officiated at many funerals during that time too.

SUNDAY 5 MAY 2024

Cyprus EasterToday the Greek Orthodox Church celebrate Christ’s resurrection and this is the traditional greeting:

Christos Anesti
Χριστός Ανέστη
Christ is Risen.

Alithos Anesti
Aληθώς ανέστη!
Truly, He is Risen.

Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and at 6.00 pm and Saint Stephen’s at 11.00 am on ‘Peter & Cornelius’ from Acts 10. I’ll get my money’s worth out of this sermon this Sunday, that’s for sure!

Peter & Cornelius

SATURDAY 4 MAY 2024
At midnight I was one of 1000’s of worshippers both inside and outside of the Church of the Apostles Paul and Barnabas to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection in the Greek Orthodox Church calendar. Paula & I and Annabel & Dan went with our friends Nick & Keylia. These are some of the piccies …

It was quite an amazing experience to be part of. Especially to see whole families coming together to mark this occasion. The tradition is that everyone carries a candle and at midnight the priests begins a chain of light that engulfs the whole church square. There is a traditional hymn sung at this time Christos Anesti and is sung for 40 days after Easter.

Christos anesti ek nekron
Χριστὸς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν
Christ is risen from the dead

 Thanato Thanaton patiras
θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας
and by His death

 Kai tis en tis mnimasi
καὶ τοῖς ἐν τοῖς μνήμασι
He has trampled down death.

 Zoin charisamenos
ζωὴν χαρισάμενος
and to those in the tomb he gave eternal life.

Afterwards, we were invited back to Keylia’s parents’ for a ‘break fast’ meal of Mayiritsa an Easter soup – which is traditionally eaten only once a year to break the fasting of Lent – along with cheese bread. Delicious. It was an unforgettable evening which resulted in a 3.00 pm bed time!

THURSDAY 2 MAY 2024
Congratulations to Lorna and Jason Dumbill from Warrington, UK, on renewing their wedding vows on their tenth anniversary at the Louis Ledra Beach Hotel in Paphos.  The first of many renewal of vows and weddings to come. So, anyone tempted to have a wedding or a renewal of vows on the beach with sand between your toes and the waves lapping up on the shore?

WEDNESDAY 1 MAY 2024
Today is a May Day Bank Holiday but because of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday many businesses are closed until Wednesday 8 May.  And that includes ‘Love Island!’ How will we cope without them? Feel withdrawal symptoms coming on already.

Love Island Easter

MONDAY 29 APRIL 2024
All eight of us went to Paphos Harbour and a trip on a glass bottomed boat to a ship wreck and a coral reef. I hate sailing and was nauseous most of the time. Not my scene man!

In the evening we went to an Elvis Tribute (Chris King) at the Sapphire Bar & Diner and it was quite fabulous – as you can see by the pictures – with a clever use of live videos too. Ben and Beth were in the wrong/prime position and so they were quite involved in the performance which was great fun – they thought I’d set them up, but I didn’t. Honestly! ‘Elvis’ knew I was a Reverend (probably from my booking) and he dedicated ‘How Great Thou Art’ to me (I think Elvis sang Gospel better than anyone) and it was quite moving to hear everyone singing along in the chorus. This hymn was also the first song sung at my induction service on Saturday, which made it even more special. Carol the manager has a great team and I can highly recommend a visit!

SUNDAY 28 APRIL 2024
Preaching at Saint Luke’s with the sermon title ‘I Am The True Vine’ from John 15:1-8.

I Am The True Vine

Today is Palm Sunday in the Greek Orthodox Church which marks the beginning of Holy Week. Easter weekend is a Bank Holiday and along with a May Day Bank Holiday many businesses will enjoy a long break. Hope we don’t runout of supplies in the meantime!

SATURDAY 27 APRIL 2024
My Induction Service with the Archdeacon of Cyprus, took place at Saint Stephen’s, Tala on Saturday 27 April at 2.00 pm. With over 100 in attendance it was a wonderful occasion for myself, my family, the parish and the many guests from Paphos churches, the Royal British Legion and Rotary. Archdeacon Christopher gave a very helpful talk on embracing changes in the parish! I want to say a special thank you to Chris and Jacquie who put in a great deal of effort to make the service run smoothly. It was especially lovely that so many came back to the Parish House (18 Georgiou Christoforou, House 4, 8250, Empa) for Afternoon Tea. Thank you to Paula, and the family, for all their hard work. It was a very special day. Here are some piccies to mark the occasion.

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 2024
Ben and Beth, Annabel and Dan and Peter and Rachel (family) have all arrived safely on the island for my Induction Service on Saturday.  Dylan is past himself and doesn’t know who to go to first. We booked an Air B&B a couple of doors down which is more than a little convenient. If any of you are interested in coming over from the UK to spend a few days with us in a larger group – this is perfect.  We are well situated for beaches the harbour etc., but you’d probably need to hire a car. We hired one for the family, fully insured from Hertz for 25 Euros a day!!

And now that Ben is here the most important piece of unpacking is now in place.

THURSDAY 25 APRIL 2024
Really pleased to see that a memorial plaque has been put on the bench near to #Billericay War Memorial in memory of Len Hale. It is a fitting tribute to a true gent. Len was a friend and I was privileged to give the address at his funeral service in May 2023. Rest well Len – you are fondly remembered in the hearts and minds of your friends in the RBL, churches and across the town.

Saint George’s Day

SUNDAY 21 APRIL 2024
Preached at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Stephen’s with the sermon title ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’ from Psalm 23. I received some amazing feedback from this talk – a preachers dream!

SATURDAY 20 APRIL 2024
I performed my first Baptism here in Cyprus today for Arianna Geraldine Fletcher. Peter (the dad) is from Middlesbrough and we’ve enjoyed some great banter over the last few weeks. It was a joy to spend time afterwards with Joanna (mum) and godparents and friends over some refreshments and to make some new friends along the way.

FRIDAY 19 APRIL
Found another coffee shop called OKNO about 15 mins walk away that is also a venue for darts and pool! Looks like I could be spending sometime there when we have visitors. Spent a long time talking to the owner about God and faith.  This was only possible because she made such a fuss of Dylan.  He’s still attracting attention wherever we go.  Talking about Dylan, by law, we have to put up a ‘beware of the dog’ notice on the gate.  Most of the official notices have pictures of Alsatians, so I thought I’d make my own. Would you really by afraid of this dog?
Beware of the dogTHURSDAY 18 APRIL
Attended a committee meeting of the Paphos branch of the Royal British Legion (I was appo9nted Chaplain earlier in the year). Today was also a solemn day as it is the fourth anniversary of my dad’s death at 89 years of age.

TUESDAY 16 APRIL 2024
Went to Limassol to try and sort out my immigration status. Seems we have been wrongly advised and have now had to send documents back to the FDCO to be legalised which is rather frustrating as these could have been done when we were still living in the UK. AGH!

Still unpacking but most of it is done – now need to give some thought to my study!  Too much stuff and too little space!

Missing Gail’s in Billericay High Street for coffee and cinnamon rolls – and the staff of course! However, Cinnabon is equally delicious over here!

SUNDAY 14 APRIL 2024
Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s with the sermon title ‘Jesus appears to His disciples’ from Luke 34:36b-48.

Jesus appears to His disciples

SATURDAY 13 APRIL 2024
Enjoyed a great evening with Rhys Taylor at ‘Love Island Cakes’ in Kissongera  Mostly covers but Rhys has a great voice and is a mean guitar player.  Highlight, for me, was a cover of Chris Stapleton’s Tennessee Whiskey. However, I think folk need to be educated about what a ‘listening gig’ means! Such a fab venue and some great nibbles to be had too!

TUESDAY 9 APRIL TO FRIDAY 12 APRIL 2024
We’re still unpacking! Found an amazing garden centre nearby  X-Rays and blood tests for immigration (both taken in an hour and immediate X-ray results – amazing!) and as well visiting our agent.  Zoom prayers, Holy Communion, a church council meeting, Baptism visit, parish notices, sermon prep and admin. And still unpacking – this will take an age. One of the quirky things about houses over here is that they have the windowsills on the outside rather than inside. So where do you put your ornaments? Quite an issue for us – so a good number may have to go in a box in the shed, along with the additional pictures we have no space for.  This is the current state of my study!

MONDAY 8 APRIL 2024
Found our local coffee shop ‘Love Island Cakes’ in Kissongera, about 1 km away. Food and staff brilliant. We got tickets for a gig on Saturday evening. Seems just like the perfect intimate event for us after hosting monthly house gigs for 30-35 people for over 15 years in Billericay. Anyone fancy joining us?

Those of a certain vintage will remember this name. However, I can guarantee that the furniture is a much better quality than that being sold by Albert and Harold! Will it be delivered by horse & cart or van?  Watch this space!
SteptoesSUNDAY 7 APRIL 2024
No church today as I had Sunday off as I was moving house and unpacking. We went to Polemi in the mountains for the annual Tulip festival – not Tulips as we would know them. Apparently they go back to Alexander the Great and Polemi is the only place in Cyprus where they grow! We enjoyed some traditional Cypriot in the town square before everyone walked to the Tulip fields together.

I donated my vintage Yamaha RD350 YPVS to the Christian Motorcyclists Association before moving to Cyprus. An original 1990 H Reg which I’d had for over 30 years. Sorry to see it go but pleased it’s been put to good use. Apparently it created a lot of interest. Really great to see a Holy Bible on the seat!

SATURDAY 6 APRIL 2024
Enjoyed a Coffee Morning at PAWS dog shelter and making new friends. In the afternoon we enjoyed a super lunch with Robert and Julia. And later in the day it was really great to catch up, quite unexpectedly, with Paul and Ruth (friends from Calvary Fellowship, Sunderland) today at Paphos Harbour and Ayia Kyriaki (Saint Paul’s Pillar). It’s been a while but so good to catch up with each others news.

FRIDAY 5 APRIL 2024
Went for a walk with Dylan around Empa – such a quaint place. Bumped into Harold and Betty, a retired miner who hails from Easington Lane – it’s such a small world.

THURSDAY 4 APRIL 2024
Wahey! Finally moved into Parish House in Empa from temporary accommodation in Tremithousa. Two loaded vans and reunited with worldly goods that were packed and shipped in December. These chaps from Peter Morton Removals were quite brilliant all day. As have all the staff in UK and Cyprus especially managing customs for us. I can thoroughly recommend them. Thanks guys.

TUESDAY 2 APRIL 2024
Starting to pack up today for our move to the Parish House in Empa on Thursday.  We will finally be able to have all of our worldly goods delivered which have been in storage since November 2023. Living minimally in the meantime has been hard work.

An article I wrote has been included in the April 2024 edition of the Paphos Post. Hoping to have a regular column in the months to come.

The Paphos Post: An Introduction

SUNDAY 31 MARCH 2024
I’m not leading at Ayia Kyriaki today as they are using incense and I’m allergic to it!  My colleague Revd William is leading in my place.  I’ll be attending but ready to make a quick exit if it gets too much! However, I’m leading at Saint Stephen’s and preaching on:

Easter Sunday 2024: Blessed Assurance

GOOD FRIDAY 29 MARCH 2024
I helped to lead a very special Good Friday Service of Reflection at Ayia Kyriaki.

MAUNDY THURSDAY 28 MARCH 2024
Paula went back to the Wirral, UK, to spend Easter weekend with her family. I led Maundy Thursday services at Saint Luke’s and Saint Stephen’s – always a poignant service in the Christian calendar. This was my talk:

Maundy Thursday: The Full Extent Of Jesus’ Love

PALM SUNDAY 24 MARCH 2024
Not the best of weeks since we’ve been here. Paula has been in bed with a nasty virus that has been going round and I’ve been in bed since Friday afternoon (and I’m rarely ill). Poor Dylan – he can’t nurse both of us. I can’t believe this meant I wasn’t able to attend the Palm Sunday services.

Easter 2024

Hoping I’ll recover enough to be on duty later in the week. Do say a little prayer for us both. You might find these helpful during Holy Week:

Daily Reflections for Holy Week

MONDAY 18 MARCH 2024
Today is a Bank Holiday in Cyprus and is the beginning of Lent that culminates in the Orthodox Easter Sunday. It is known as Green Monday – or “Clean Monday, Pure Monday, Ash Monday, or Monday of Lent” – and marks the end of the Carnival season (which we attended on Saturday afternoon).

green-monday-free-vectorOn Green Monday, Christians fast from midnight to noon apart from abstaining from wine, meat, eggs, and dairy products. Devout Christians also dedicate a significant part of the day to reading the Bible. Traditional food eaten includes olives, octopus, and shrimp. A unique type of unleavened bread called ‘Lagana’ is prepared and baked only on Clean Monday. The bread is a reminder of God providing ‘Manna’ to the Children of Israel as he guided them through the desert to the Promised Land.

But the most important event of all on Green Monday (so I understand) is kite flying, either on the beach or at a park.

SUNDAY 17 MARCH 2024
Preaching at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Stephen’s with the sermon title ‘Are We There Yet?’ from John 12:20-33.

Are We There Yet?

Today is Saint Patrick’s day so we’re off to Searays Cafe/Bar for lunch with an Irish Band!

WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2024
Heard today that we’ll be able to move into the parish house in Empa on 4 April – which is very welcome news indeed.  This means Paula and I (and Dylan) will be settled into our new home well before my induction service on 24 April 2024. It might also be a few degrees warmer too as we move closer to the sea! Great to have Ben and Beth on the Island for a long weekend. Thought I’d wear my PACMAN ‘T’ just in case they didn’t recognise me! It’s been a while!B&B
TUESDAY 12 MARCH 2024

A beautiful blue sky in Tremithousa at 7.30 am today when taking Dylan for a walk. Such a great start to the day and trying to get into the habit of early morning walks before the weather gets too hot.

7.30 am 12 march 2024

We had a very moving session at our Lent Course this morning looking at ‘Mary: Grieving Mother’. I think Mary is one of history’s most misunderstood women. She’s been misunderstood by those who claim she was a perpetual, sinless virgin and by those who see her, rather than Jesus, as the mediator between God and men. We spoke about how, in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Mary is Theotokos (Mother of God) which emphasises the divine nature of Jesus rather than suggesting divine status for Mary. Caroline sent through this moving video which also has great lyrics which links to the above theme..

MONDAY 11 MARCH 2024
The Day Of The Triffids in Tremithousa – if you know you know!

I was hiding from them even while I moved among them.

They are not Fennel – though they look surprisingly similar! I’m told they are quite poisonous and grow up in no time at all.

Triffids

SUNDAY 10 MARCH 2024
Preached at Ayia Kyriaki and Saint Luke’s on the theme of Mothering Sunday and how each of us, as belonging to a ‘mother church’ have a responsibility of caring for and nurturing each other.

Mothering Sunday 2024

SATURDAY 9 MARCH 2024

I’m off to the ‘Keg and Barrel’ near the harbour to watch England vs Ireland with Nick and Keylia. I’m told it’s an infamous Rugby pub, with great food, so looking to enjoy a fabulous atmosphere – though I’m sure England will get hammered.  I’m planning to wear my England shirt – I’ll let you know if I survive in one piece!

ENGvIRE

Well what do you know … they did the unthinkable and won! Totally unexpected. Great game. Best we’ve played for a long while. In fact, I think it was the best England performance since we beat the All Blacks in the World Cup Semi Final in 2019. OK, only one point, but a wins a win!

THURSDAY 7 MARCH 2024
So, Dylan had his first #Cyprus groom today at Kims K9 Klippers – who did a great job! Isn’t he handsome?

Today is Tsiknopempti (Smoky/Smelly/BBQ Thursday) when Cypriots in villages and towns fire up the grill and large amounts of meat are traditionally consumed. The name Tsiknopempti (Τσικνοπέμπτη) comes from the Greek words Tsikna (τσίκνα), which is the smell of grilled/burning meat, and Pempti (Πέμπτη ), which means Thursday. In the Greek Orthodox tradition, fasting on Wednesday and Friday is important, therefore Thursday is the best day for this – it was quite something to see families and streets coming together to celebrate around a BBQ with loud music playing! Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional Carnival celebrations in the run-up to Lent and is celebrated 11 days before Green Monday (or Ash Monday) which this year takes place on 18 March. Green Monday has a tradition of its own – more about that nearer the time.

Talking about consuming large amounts of meat, we enjoyed another fabulous ‘Greek Night’ meal, with live music, at The hunter – Cafe Bar this time with our friends Richard and Sarah from Billericay. Marios is a great cook and Eleanor a wonderful host! Richard and Sarah say we’ve found a little gem – and they are absolutely right! ‘Greek Night’ takes place every Thursday evening and is highly recommended.

WEDNESDAY 6 MARCH 2024
The Antiquities Dept have begun repairs on the roof of Ayia Kyriaki, Kato Paphos – and gave us less than 48 hours notice! They must have started at dawn as these photographs were taken at 8.30 am. It will take around 2-3 months for the work to be completed.

TUESDAY 5 MARCH 2024
Enjoyed a stimulating Lent Course thinking about Judas.  Lot’s of perceptions changed as a result.  Great to share lunch with Amanda and Savvas afterwards.  Tuesday was a challenging day, as all was not well in Cyber Space! However … FB Blackout

MONDAY 4 MARCH 2024
Had a bit of a jaunt (6 hour round trip) to Kyrenia (on the northern tip of Turkish Cyprus) for a clergy chapter meeting where Fr Alec Mitchell, along with wife Linda, is the Chaplain at Saint Andrews.  We met at their amazing house ‘The Hermitage!’ A quite remarkable building which even boasts its own private chapel alongside some amazing grounds. It was great to share the journey with Paphos colleagues Andrew and William (I drove) and to share fellowship with friends and colleagues – many of whom I met at Diocesan Synod in February. Really great to meet up with Clive from Saint John’s, Deryneia – it works out we have mutual friends which go back to my days at Oak Hill.  The Church really is a small world.

SUNDAY 3 MARCH 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and the 6.00 pm service which begins again, after the winter break, on the First Sunday of every month. I spoke on Jesus clearing the temple.

Jesus Clears The Temple

With no 11.00 am service today, Paula and I took the opportunity to attend Petra Bible Fellowship just around the corner from us, on the Mesogi Road, where Judith, a friend of ours, attends. We received a very warm welcome, enjoyed the worship and the preaching of Pastor Mike on ‘the power of Jesus in the life of the believer.’ We’re looking forward to catching up for a coffee with Mike and his wife Olga sometime soon.

Well … whilst we didn’t come away from PAWS Dog Shelter yesterday with another dog, Paula has now decided we’re sponsoring two dogs instead! Meet Timmy & Teddy – plus Dylan of course!

SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2024
We went to a coffee morning (and enjoyed a bacon buttie) today at PAWS Dog Shelter Paphos. Quite an amazing set up looking after 150 dogs. They have a ‘no kill’ policy so some dogs, if they can’t find a home, have been there for a number of years.  They have 3 full time staff but dozens of volunteers – each having the same dogs to look after on a weekly basis. But, as I said to Paula: “We arrived with one dog and we’ll leave with one’ which we did. One dog is enough!” Having said that, posted this yesterday!

Just a dog

Another poor result from Sunderland today – a 1-0 defeat away to Norwich. We are now 9 points from reloegation and 9 points from a play off place.  Which is it to be?

FRIDAY 1 MARCH 2024
The 1 March celebrates Saint David – the patron Saint of Wales. So, “Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus” to all my Welsh friends – don’t forget to wear your Daffodils and Leeks with pride!

Saint David’s Day

I’m pleased to announce that my induction into the parish, by the Archdeacon of Cyprus, is planned for Saturday 27 April 2024 at 2.00 pm – if you are interested in joining with me or travelling over from the UK!  The following weekend is Greek Orthodox Easter so you could stay for the week and take in the Easter celebrations. Unfortunately, our house will be full but there are several excellent hotels around!

I attended the World Day of Prayer service today, which was written by the women of Palestine – quite poignant given all that is taking place in Gaza and Israel at the moment. I was particularly moved by the following:

Put peace into each other’s hands …

THURSDAY 29 FEBRUARY 2024
So, leap year day! Did anyone get proposed to by the woman if your life?  Do let me know if you did. We’re getting into the habit of going for a walk to the local Deli and/or Coffee Shop every day. Not quite Gail’s but coffee and cakes are delicious. I’m happy to say that I’ve lost some weight since I’ve been here – and that’s before the sauna weather arrives. We sit outside in the sun for breakfast at 7.30 am when it’s a cool 18′ – this is the life!

We went to the Hunters Bar, a local Taverna, for a traditional Cypriot meal – which was absolutely delicious. There was Cypriot music too and dancing, but no plate smashing! It’s one of the most authentic meals we’ve had here going back many years. We’ll be going again next week with Richard and Sarah.  Not a great video but it gives you a taste!

SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s at 11.00 am on what it means to follow Jesus. Always good to meet those who visiting on holiday!

I have decided to follow Jesus!

SATURDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2024
So, weather is getting warmer during the day, around 18/20′ but it feels cold in the shade, indoors and on an evening too.  Though I guess we’ll be pleased about that at the height of the summer.

Looks like the tenants will be moving out of the church house mid March and so we’ll be on the move from our temporary and accommodation take delivery of the rest of our worldly goods. It will be nice to put down some roots and turn a house into a home – it feels as though we’ve been living out of a suitcase since mid-November. And we have!

Another poor result for Sunderland (lost 1-2 at home to Swansea) looks like our playoff hopes will have to be deferred ’til next season!

Went to a quaint traditional pub nearby called ‘The Hunter Bar’ to watch Scotland vs England. It’s never good to see England lose but it was a very disappointing result. The coaching team are not up to international standard – we’ve been left wanting for several months now – and some players have had their day, too.

The Hunter Bar

THURSDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2024
Today I was interviewed by John Holdsworth for the Bible Lands magazine – watch this space! In the evening, Paula and I visited the Rotary Club of Paphos-Aphrodite and enjoyed a wonderful meal at Poppadums Indian Restaurant (thoroughly recommended) as well as making new friends. What an interesting bunch of people they were.  Carol, the secretary, is from Newcastle, but I didn’t hold that against her!

WEDNESDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2024
Met the Principal of the NOVA Primary School to talk about how I might be able to serve the school. as well as Nick and Keylia for a coffee at Cafe Nero in Paphos Old Town overlooking the harbour – what a view! I’ll remember to take a photo next time. Such a lovely couple with a great story to tell. They gave us some great shopping tips too!  Paula arrived from UK in the middle of our chat!

TUESDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2024
We begin our twice weekly Zoom Prayers on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 9.00 am. DM for log on details. Liturgy for Morning Prayer during Lent can be downloaded here ACP Morning Prayer – Lent A4

Lent Course 2024: People on the Edge

With Paula being away I’ve binged on two series of Reacher and really enjoyed it. I read one of Lee Childs’ books and he’s just like I imagined him. It stars Alan Ritchson (a Christian BTW) as Major Jack Reacher, a former US Army Military Policeman or lives life as a drifter/hobo but finding trouble along the way. This is much more authentic than the Tom Cruise film. How can he play someone who is 6’5″ – even with booster heels in his shoes?

Reacher - Binged

MONDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2024
I’m delighted to announce I’ve been elected as Chaplain to the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion. How wonderful. I met with the committee soon after my arrival and offered my services! I look forward to a fruitful partnership.

Took Dylan for a walk by the harbour on Monday and was stopped by twelve families for a cuddle and to take a photo: 3 English, 3 Cypriot, 3 Polish, Estonian, Finnish and Spanish. He really is an attraction and it also shows how many nationalities holiday in Paphos.

SUNDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2024
Preached today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at 11.00 am on the Baptism of Jesus. Met a couple at Saint Stephen’s who are from Handforth in Cheshire, where I served my curacy. I’m realising week-by-week here what a small world we live in.

The Baptism of Jesus

SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2024
I attended a Zoom seminar with Archbishop Hosam and the clergy in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East (which includes Cyprus and the Gulf) with the theme ‘Christian ministry in the time of war!’ It was hugely informative given what is taking place in Israel, Yemen, Syria and Iraq at the moment. It was very sobering and heart breaking as we thought about how to be church in the context of whom we serve (we have differing priorities as a result), how we put our faith into action, how we offer pastoral care and how we stand for peace and justice and how we represent those who have no voice and those on the margins. I have great admiration for my colleagues, and church members, ministering in such difficult and trying circumstances and for many others across the province where Christianity is a minority faith. This session will also help inform my prayers for the region.

Another dismal showing by Sunderland as we lost away to Birmingham City.  Well done Tony Mowbray – he should never have been sacked.

FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2024
Went for a walk with Dylan and explored the quaint village of Tremithousa and stumbled upon Agios Georgios church.  A big church for a small village. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

This was posted in this week’s Church Times. Better late than never!

Happy Birthday to the Angel of the North; 26 years old today. Such a wonderful and unique structure that so many people continue to cherish and enjoy. Created by Anthony Gormley on the site of a former colliery. You don’t realise the size until you stand next to it. Photo’s courtesy of Stevie Landscapes NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

So, the parish have released this video to encourage folk in the UK to consider a Christian wedding here in Paphos. What do you think?

WEDNESDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2024
Had a busy couple of days! Enjoyed my first parish ‘Beetle Drive’ on Shrove Tuesday with pancakes for dessert, of course! Great to meet more church members. On Ash Wednesday I spoke and led Communion at all three churches.  It’s is such a special day and the liturgy of penance is so moving. You can read my talk here:

Ash Wednesday 2024

MONDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2024
Took Paula and Annabel to the airport at the unearthly hour of 3.30 am!  Just as well I was up watching the Super Bowl. Great memories of attending Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix, Arizona in 2015. Ben supported the New English Patriots and me the Seattle Seahawks.

Richard and Alison, the visitors at AK yesterday, made contact and we had a catch-up and a prayer this morning. If you’re visiting Paphos, be sure to get in touch and we can share a coffee together.

SUNDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Luke’s, Polis at 11.00 am. A number of visitors at Ayia Kyriaki this AM – there always is! Great to see ‘Old Oak’ Richard Steven, and his wife Alison attending AK alongside a couple of ‘new winers’ from Chichester (read my sermon to see the significance of this).

MONDAY 5 FEBRUARY – FRIDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2024
I attended the Synod of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf at the Golden Bay Hotel in Larnaca (what a fabulous venue – though synod was soooo busy I didn’t have time to make use if any of the facilities and only managed a 10 min walk along the beach!). The theme was ‘Our Missionary Calling’ and the keynote speaker was Revd Canon Dr Penial Rajkumar, director of Global Mission for USPG.

We don’t have a Bishop at the moment (though Revd Sean Semple was announced as the sixth Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf during the Synod) so the Archbishop of Jerusalem was chairing. I made my declarations and received my license from Archbishop Hosam at the opening Eucharist on Monday so  now my appointment is official and I have a contract for three years. A date for a formal induction in the parish is yet to be arranged. Synod was like a meeting of the UN with all countries from gulf represented including Iran and Yemen. It was stimulating, tiring, amazing and informative. I enjoyed meeting my new colleagues, making new friends (I’ve received invitations from across the Gulf) as well as getting to know Jayne, Sarah and Jacquie who who attended from Paphos. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

Whilst I was away, Annabel came over to stay with Paula and Dylan and I know they had exciting things planned! I’ll have next weekend with Annabel before she flies home with Paula on Monday who has some work to do both at ARU and the Rectory.

SUNDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2024
Preaching today at Ayia Kyriaki at 8.15 am and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at 11.00 am.

Jesus, Lord Of All Creation

Sunderland played a North East derby away to Middlesborough – another bore draw!

SATURDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2024
A few face-to-face meetings this week and finalising details for the 2024 Lent Course (This is a resource I’ve not used before so looking forward to it!) as well as sermon writing and future planning! We’ve found a dog-sitter who, after ‘interviewing’ Dylan, along with some other dogs, has agreed to ‘look after him’ when needed.  They have an amazing compound so Dylan will get plenty of exercise and meet other doggies too. Great to see that the Six nations has started and will be sure to watch the games. A 2 hour difference for sporting events is a bit of a problem at times as they start and finish so late!

Heard from musician Keith James (who played a couple of House Gigs in Billericay) and he’s hoping to come over in September and so revpacman promotions will be starting House Gigs in Paphos.  same format, only this time it will probably be outside – depending on the weather.  Very much looking forward to that. I’ll confirm the date ASAP just in case some of you want to book a hotel for the weekend and join with us.

THURSDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2024
Weather has been a mix of brilliant sunshine and miserable rain. However, we went for a walk along the coast on Thursday and stopped for a coffee and this was the view (and an ariel view of the harbour)! Made a few people jealous on my WhatsApp group and on social media. NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge.

Think we’ve found the supermarket for us – Papantoniou! They have a huge selection and a great home wear dept too! We also found the very quaint ‘Tala Square’ with several bars and Taverna’s which, when opened, is sure to have a great vibe. Watch out for piccies. I put together my first notice sheet (format might be familiar so some of you) you can read it here.  01 ACP News 4 & 11 February 2024

WEDNESDAY 31 JANUARY 2024
Met Judith Evans, the editor of the Paphos Post, for a coffee on Wednesday (who, I found out is a Christian). We shared hopes and dreams for the future – watch this space. She also runs a shop selling vintage women’s clothing called Revival Fashion – Paula loved it. Have a feeling any ladies who come to visit will be taken to it.

MONDAY 29 JANUARY 2024
I had an appointment with customs today and hoping for a quick turn around on all our worldly goods – they’ve been on the ‘high seas’ since 15 December 2023 having packed earlier in the month!  There’s been a huge amount of admin for customs and immigration over the past three months – who voted for Brexit, eh? In the afternoon I had a meeting with the Paphos Branch of the Royal British Legion which seemed to go well. In the late afternoon we had torrential rain, with thunderbolts and lightening – very, very frightening! Wasn’t expecting that!

SUNDAY 28 JANUARY 2024
Preaching today at Saint Luke’s, Polis (a 60km round trip) and whilst there is a lot of driving, roads are great and we are 10km (15 mins) from Paphos Harbour and 8 km from the Kings Shopping Mall.

Presentation of Christ in the Temple

On our way back, Paula asked what I would like for dinner and I replied: “A full English!” So, back to the harbour and a full English it was – and very reasonably priced, and very tasty, too! All car parks were full, but the perk of being the Anglican Chaplain is that I have a car parking space 5 mins walk away at Ayia Kyriaki!

SATURDAY 27 JANUARY 2024
It’s a been a busy old time since I arrived, dealing with customs, immigration, opening a bank account,  setting up the TV to receive BBC and Sky etc (who hasn’t been watching ‘The Traitors?’) and getting used to lovely winter sun, walks around the harbour and meeting new folk! I’ve made contact with a variety of groups including the local Royal British legion and the Paphos Rotary Club – that’s on top of church meetings and services.

Watch the lads vs Stoke! Great result. HawayThe Lads.

Folk seem particularly friendly and it’s amazing how many people Dylan has started a conversation with. Whilst weather is great during the day (I’m wearing shorts and a T most of the time and it’s only January) it does get less warm on an evening – though Paula is feeling this much more than me.

Finding a supermarket to suit is a challenge so still ‘shopping around’ to find one we like! However, we have found a ‘Marks & Sparks!” There’s also a 24 hr Bakery/Deli along the road which is very tasty – though not Gail’s and no Cinnamon Rolls!

Went to the local theatre ‘Stage One Theatre, Emba’ this evening to see ‘Tell me on a Sunday’. It was a  compact, quaint place, seating around 100-120.  Could revpacman promotions use this as a venue, I wonder? Need to make some enquiries!!

Tell me Sunday

FRIDAY 26 JANUARY 2024
Spent nearly two hours at the Hellenic Bank opening an account (I need to do this is order to comply with immigration and customs to quality for residency in order to be able to perform my duties as a registrar for Weddings). Invited out for a meal with Andrew and Monica.

WEDNESDAY 24 JANUARY 2024
Led my first midweek communion service at Ayia Kyriaki and then went to visit Peter at Saint Luke’s, Polis.

TUESDAY 23 JANUARY 2024
Went for a coffee to the Amphitheatre in Tala! Wrote an introductory article for the ‘Paphos Post’ (I’m not hanging around!). In the evening I took part in an Ecumenical Service for the week of Christian Unity – glad I wasn’t asked to preach! Met some visitors who were on holiday from Cambridge!
Ecumenical service 2024

Did I mention that we have our bins emptied twice a week?  No different coloured bins here or white and blue sacks! Billericay folk will be quite jealous.

SUNDAY 21 JANUARY 2024
8.15 am service at Ayia Kyriaki followed by a joint service of Saint Luke’s, Polis and Saint Stephen’s, Tala at Tala – all seemed to go well. Folk were very welcoming and encouraging.

ACP Logo Photos

We were given a huge amount of fresh oranges.  All we need now is a juicer! Invited out to lunch to Bryn and Christine’s.

Five Principles For Being Church

SATURDAY 20 JANUARY 2024
Trying to find a supermarket for us – not as easy as it sounds.  Finding a supermarket to suit is a challenge so still ‘shopping around’ to find one we like! However, we have found a ‘Marks & Sparks!” We’re 8 km from the Kings Shopping Mall.

Putting finishing touches to my talk for tomorrow and this has been essential reading since I arrived.

Essential reading

FRIDAY 19 JANUARY
Wasted no time in driving down to Paphos Harbour for a walk and an ice cream. Dylan is a cause for conversation – you were right Donna. 21’ here! NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

THURSDAY 18 JANUARY 2024
After catching up on admin (and making a start on my talk for Sunday). Graham and Mary took me out to lunch. Paula arrived at 6.30 pm – three hours behind schedule due to ice and fog at Stansted. No such problems here!

Temperature January 2024

Dylan arrived at 11.30 pm after flying in to Larnaca from Gatwick. He seemed none the worse for wear – a BIG thank you to Annie’s Ark for arranging this and thank you to the Billericay & Little Burstead Team Churches whose parting gift financed Dylan’s flight and crate! NB. Click on photo’s to enlarge!

WEDNESDAY 17 JANUARY 2024
So I arrived on Monday evening, 15 January, and it took 15 mins from walking off the plane to get through customs and collect my luggage!  Amazing.  Tuesday was spent meeting the mayor in order to register for water (the Dimarchos has a lot of influence over here – every village has one) and attending the Electric Company’s offices to register too.

We are living in temporary accommodation in Tremithousa until the lease for the tenants in the Church House comes to an end in March.

I had a drive around in the afternoon to see ‘what road leads where’ and stumbled upon this! Loved the wedges! Also realised that most independent shops close on a Wednesday afternoon (and many on a Saturday and most on a Sunday). I’ve been out and about in shorts and t shirt – had a few interesting looks. I’m obviously a tourist! This year I’m a hardy Brit, next year I’ll be a soft ex-pat. Mark my words!
